World of Work Assessment

Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson pupils will be able to… All: Describe positive and negative effects Nike can have on developing countries (L5) Most: Explain positive and negative effects of manufacturing abroad using evidence (L6) Some: Reflect on other people’s opinions regarding manufacturing abroad (L7+)

Your Task You are the president of Kalistan, an imaginary developing country, and Nike have asked if they can set up a new factory in your country. You need to make an informed decision and decide if you are going to allow Nike into your country to manufacture clothes.

To help you make this decision, you are going to see some examples of the impacts Nike has had on other developing countries. Firstly you will watch a video about Nike’s effects on Cambodia, then you will watch a video about Nike’s flagship factory in Vietnam. While watching these videos you must make notes on the sheet provided to help make a decision.

Based on the information gathered from the videos… Are you going to let Nike manufacture footwear in your country? Write your answer and a brief reason why on the back of your video notes sheet.

Task You must now write a letter to Phil Knight, the owner of Nike, informing him of your decision. You must show that you have taken all of the evidence into account and explain your decision clearly.

Know Your Levels! Take a look at your assessment log – what levels have you been achieving so far this What did you do well in your last assessment? What do you need to work on for the future? What assessment target are you going to set yourself???

LEVELS WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO... 4  State your decision about Nike locating in your country  Describe a range of reasons for your decision 5  State your decision about Nike locating in your country  Explain some reasons on why Nike would be good or bad for your country  Include examples/evidence to support your points 6  Explain a range of reasons in detail on why Nike would be good or bad for your country  Include various data to support your points  Reach a conclusion based on the evidence given 7  Complete the tasks set out in Level 6.  Explain in detail why some people within your country may disagree with your decision 8  Complete level 7 tasks  Suggest rules/ways that your factory could be run sustainably and without exploiting workers

What level is this??? Dear Mr Knight, I have decided to let you build a factory in my country. My first reason is because you will pay my workers a good wage, so that they will have money. My second reason for this is because you will have good working conditions and it will be safe. This is good because people can come to work and not be scared. Finally you let the workers have a break, which is needed when you work.

What level is this??? Dear Mr Knight, I have decided to let you come to Kalistan and build a Nike factory. My first reason is because in Vietnam you pay your workers a good wage ($54 a month). This is good because it would allow my people to buy food and drink and to afford a house. Another reason is you provide food for your workers and give them regular breaks. This is good because it gives people time to relax and will make them work better.

Level 5: Make your decision Explain some reasons for your decision (at least 2!!) Explain what this will mean to the people. Use evidence from the video to back up your argument. Level 6: Explain a range of reasons for your decision (at least 3!!) Explain what this will mean to the people and use lots of evidence Add a conclusion – sum up your main points Paragraph 3 (Level 7): Some people may disagree with my decision because… Include evidence from the video. Paragraph 4 (Level 8): Some rules you might want to put in your factory are… These would make your factory better because…
