3 I. Determine the Purpose A. The purpose is the same for all speeches 1. To pass on ideas 2. To pass on feelings 3. To give information to an audience 4. To get a favorable response B.Ask these questions: 1. What is my purpose? a. Inform b. Persuade c. Explain process d. Entertain

5 II. Selecting and Narrowing Topic A. Can usually be on any subject 1. You like the topic 2. Audience will get somthing from it B. Should be current C. Sources for finding topics 1. vertical file a. newspaper clippings b. brochures c, pamphlets 2. Reader's Guide t Periodical Literature a. magazines b. ariticles

Organize your facts-two basic ways 1) state opinion or belief in beginning 2) start with facts leading to belief f. Meaningless/Misleading Ideas 1) don't jump to conclusions 2) avoid simple facts most people know 3) avoid exaggerations 4) avoid only appealing to feelings 5) avoid partial or half truths

Invite them: a. get involved b. learn more c. try it sometime 5. Know exactly-word for word- end statement(s) a. don't say "that's my speech" b. "the end"

18 III. Preparing for Delivery A. Always write or type your copy (notes) neatly & leave extra wide margins B. Never run a sentence from one page to another C. Don't abbreviate unless you explain them 1. YMCA 2. FBI 3. ppl-people 4. w/ or w/o-with or without D. Number each page or note card

20 IV. Practicing the Delivery A. Practice outloud B. Have someone listen and offer ideas C. Stand in front of a mirror D. Tape yourself E. Become familiar enough to get out of notes F. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

22 V. Giving your Speech A. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE B. Speak loudly and clearly--don't yell! C. Don't rush 1. Take your time 2. let voice add color and interest D. Use your hands 1. use to hold visual aid 2. for demonstration 3. hold note cards 4. have gestures that enhance-NOT DISTRACT 5, relax-enjoy the process

23 Timing: Here is how the timing will work: If the speech is 3-5—3 to 3:5 =3 3:6 to 4:4=3.5 4:5 to 5=4 If the speech is 5-7—5 to5:5=3 5:6 to 6:4=3.5 6:5 to 7=4 If the speech is 7-10—7 to8=3 8:1 to 9=3.5 9:1 to 10=4 If you go under or over, you could lose points, so be sure to edit.
