Simple Machines Day 25

A Simple Machine?  Simple machines help us do work.  Machines make work easy.

So What?  Simple machines make work easier  Simple machines either change the amount of force on an object or change the direction of the force  Machines DON’T diminish the amount of work we do—they just make it easier!  Two or more SIMPLE machines make a COMPLEX machine!

What is a Simple Machine?  Simple machines have few or no moving parts.  There are 6 kinds of simple machines.

What are the 6 kinds of simple machines? 1.Inclined plane 2. Wedge 3. Screw 4.Wheel and axle 5. Pulley 6. Lever

An Inclined Plane?

 …inclined plane is like a flat board that is higher on one end. Actually, an Inclined Plane…  …inclined plane makes work easier.

Can you think of some other inclined planes?

A Wedge?

 … is two inclined planes pushed together like a V.  …pushes things away from each other.  …split things. Actually, a wedge…

Can you think of some other wedges?

A Screw(ge)?

 …is an inclined plane wrapped around a shaft or cylinder (the inclined plane allows the screw to move itself when rotated).  …holds things together and can make them go up and down. Actually, a screw…

Can you think of some other screws?

Wheels and axles?

 …is a pole that goes through the wheel which allows the wheel to turn Actually, a wheel and axle…

Can you think of some other wheels and axles?

Pulleys?

 … is a wheels and axles with a groove around the outside ..needs a rope, chain or belt around the groove to make it do work Actually, a pulley…

Can you think of some other pulleys?

Lever?

 … is a board on top of something else.  …can balance things or move them Actually, a lever…

Can you think of some other levers?

 Direction: Draw the following table. Using your last table. Write the six types of simple machines under the heading TYPE. Use the next slide to label the pictures according to the type. TypePicture

a. Zipper b. Wheel barrow c. Screw d. Hammer e. ramp d. Flag and Flag Pole

Explore: Categorize-Simple Machines Direction: On the left-side, Draw and write the following table. Voc word Definition Types Facts Examples (1 word) (6) (4) (8)

Directions: Classify the terms and statements under the correct heading in your table. In no specific order. Simple Machine less effort Screw Wheel and Axle screwdriver Makes work easy less time knife Wedge corkscrew scissors Device that performs a task stairs Lever block and tackle Change the size of force arm Pulley Incline Plane wheelchair ramp

Explain: Simple Machines  Simple Machines make work easier and effortless.  CHANGES THE SIZE and/or DIRECTION OF A FORCE.  You can move big objects with less force.

Complex Machine Directions: On the left-side of your notebook, Copy the following questions. How does this picture show complex machines? What are the simple machines that make up this complex machine?

Elaborate: Simple Machine Flip Book  Directions: Read the worksheet for steps to create your flip book.  YOU HAVE TO USE COLORING PENCILS.

Exit Slip  List five examples from your everyday life you would classify as one of the different simple machines
