3 Brainstorming Have you ever tried to move something by yourself then had to ask someone else or move it in a way so that is would make the job easier? Today we are going to learn about six simple machines that make jobs easier. 3

4 Six simple machines 1. Lever- is a stiff board or bar that rests on a pivot, or turning point, called a fulcrum. 4

5 Six simple machines 2. Inclined plane has a flat surface that is higher on one end. You can use it to move an object to a lower or higher place. 5

6 Six simple machines 3. Wedge is made up of two inclined planes. These planes meet and form a sharp edge. 6

7 Six simple machines 4.Screw is actually an inclined plane that winds around a cylinder. 7

8 Six simple machines 5. Wheel and axel has two parts. The axle, or rod, that goes through the wheel allows it to turn. 8

9 Six simple machines 6. Pulley has two parts: a rope and wheel. The rope fits on the groove of the wheel. One part of the rope is attached to the load. Pulling down on the rope moves the load up. 9

11 Step 2: Look at the following cartoon and see how many simple machines you can find. The following cartoonist’s name is Rube Goldberg he was born on July 4 th,1883 and graduated from college with a degree in Engineering. 15 Step 4: Draw one of your own try and use two or more simple machines. 15

16 Step 5: Building a simple machine You have all the necessary materials in the box. 1. Tape all three pencils together forming a triangle. Also tape a paper cup at both ends of the ruler. 2. Place the pencils underneath the ruler. 3. Place a rock in one of the paper cups. 4. Slowing place one paper clip at a time in the other paper cup. Continue this until the paperclip cup raises and the cup with the rock lowers. 16

18 Step 7: Building Part II 1.Take the ruler that you had before and move one of the cups closer to the middle on the ruler. 2. Make sure both cups are empty. Then place the rock in the one that is closer to the middle of the ruler. 3. Slowly begin placing paper clips in the cup one at a time. 4. Did anything change in the amount of paper clips used? 5.
