William Golding said this novel was… “an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature.”

III. SETTING Time=after the beginning of the atomic age (W W II) when English boys were evacuated by plane from their homeland. Place=a tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific. It is shaped like a boat and contains orchards, a jungle, a beach, a warm water lagoon, and a rocky mountain ridge.

CHARACTERS Protagonist-single character or small group of characters whose goal or problem is the core of the plot. This character does not have to be good, but a good protagonist may be described as the “hero” of the story. Antagonist-character, group or force that opposes the protagonist, sometimes referred to as the villian.

What literary award has the author won? What does that signify to you?

II. Allusion A reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art with which the author expects the reader to be familiar. ( i.e. Bible, mythology, Shakespeare, political & historical events) This novel has two primary allusions.

Allusions to The Coral Island Chapter 1,pg. 14 “Here was a coral island.” Chapter 2, pg. 32 Ralph says, “While we’re waiting we can have a good time on this island….It’s like in a book.” The boys respond with titles such as, “Treasure Island-,” “Swallows and Amazons-,” “Coral Island-.”

The Coral Island by Robert Ballantyne The Coral Island was published in 1857 and was popular reading for most English children. It is an adventure story about 3 shipwrecked boys, Ralph, Jack, and Peterkin (Simon) who live in harmony and happiness on an island. They encounter cannibals but are rescued by their teacher. It is one of the 1 st books written about adventures of children without adults present.

Biblical Allusion The island is often referred to as a “good island” like paradise in the Garden of Eden in the Bible. The novel contains many references to snakes/beasts. The Bible refers to the “snake” that caused man to be kicked out of paradise. The title contains Biblical allusions.
