1. Steps / Ladder pre use checks An awareness for operatives

2. Legislation Working at Height Regulations Require that all work at height is planned. This means all possible means of access are considered. Steps/ ladders should not be the first choice. The Provision and Use Of Work Regulations Require that any work equipment is fit for purpose To ensure that the ladder used on site are in good condition you MUST carry out a pre use check, and record it

3. Ladder pre use checks Log Each set of steps / ladder on site has a log to record the pre use checks. This has space for users to record the daily pre use checks and for supervisors to carry out a random check. The following procedure is to be carried out before using any steps / ladders and consists of 7 checks.

4. 1. Ensure the ladder tag is fitted This should record the date the ladder was last fully checked If no tag is present do not use the ladder and inform your manager/ supervisor.

5. 2. Check for damaged stiles ( the sides of the ladders)

6. 3. Check for damaged or missing rungs

7. 4. Check for missing feet (where applicable) Missing feet can allow the ladder / steps to slip on smooth surfaces. They can also cause damage to floor coverings.

8. 5. Check for ladders which have paint on them Ladders should not have any paint on them as this can conceal defects. This could be on the stiles or rungs.

9. 6. Check that the ladder label in in place This label gives the safe working load.

10. 7a. Check that steps have 2 safety ropes / chains The ropes / chains should be the same length and not frayed. The ropes / chains should be secured at both ends. The spreader bar should not be distorted and have good fixings at each end.

11. 7b. Check the Ladder extension guide brackets A guide bracket should be fitted on both stiles of the ladder. The extending part of the ladder should move freely through the ladder guides. The guides should be securely fixed to the non moving part.

12. Paper work Complete the ladder pre use check log Return log to file. Notify your manager of any damage or other concerns.
