1 2016 Contractor Safety Training What's New – What's Hot

2 What’s New. Re-organization – New Maintenance Manager Dan Anctil, Superintendents: PM/Logistics Matt Vose Specialties/Coatings Brandi Couture Demolition – Several demolition projects are running at our facility. Please do not enter these areas without permission. Traffic routes have changed: Bldg. 37 11/14 PM top floor removal in process. Cumberland St lots 2&3 restricted to only contractors involved in demolition projects. Cameras - New system wider surveillance. External and internal. Access Control Doors – External and internal doors General Rules – Jewelry = Nothing dangling. Confined Space Standard for Construction – Know how it affects your work. Silica Standard – Affects filter plant work

3 Not so New but Still Important Hazard communication and global harmonization system. Safety Data Sheets vs MSDSs. Icons vs text. New labels needed. If resident contractor must provide updated information by June. Water/Coffee: Not readily available from faucets. Provide accordingly Crane Plans are needed for any machine that has a lifting device. Check list is available. Electrical Distribution Standard published and electrical clearances have changed. Check with a SAPPI electrical planner. Website with Video link for training.

4 What’s Hot Ladder Use - Stable platform vs ladder vs. broke carts, tables, & piping - Proper ladder for application - Tie off ladder/ tie off person - Ladder footing (stable, even base, with feet) - Ladder condition including labels Gas bottle storage. –Separate incompatible materials with a proper barrier. (Fuels and oxidizers must be separated by space or rated barrier when not in use.) –Store bottles with protective cap on –Chain or cable. No rope –Minimum amount needed –Do not leave inside the mill

5 What’s Hot  Fall Protection: Pre-planning and rescue plans. Fall protection – use proper anchor points and proper lanyards use. Individual fall rescue plans are required. “Call PPD” is not adequate. Theft/contraband –Searches will be conducted –Have paperwork for all materials removed from site –Label tools

6 What’s Hot Accountability - Contractors ar e expected to report to Gate #9 when arriving on site. –Sign in / sign out –Must get out of your vehicle and sign in and out with the dispatcher. - Only vehicles with company signage will be allowed on site. Traffic Control /Congestion/Contractors parking on-site shall park only in designated areas. Hotwork Permits, Line Breaking Permits, Ground Penetration, and Confined Space Permits are to be closed out on a daily basis. –All permits shall be returned to the dispatch center at Gate #9. –All permits are closed out with the dispatcher at Gate #9.

7 Concerns From This Past Year Ladder Use Stable platform vs ladder vs. broke carts, tables, & piping Proper ladder for application Tie off ladder/ tie off person Ladder footing (stable, even base, with feet) Ladder condition Lockout Verification New installations (when is lockout needed) Housekeeping – the work is not complete until the area is cleaned upon completion of the job. Properly dispose of waste. Theft Smoking on Sappi property Distractions Traffic and Unloading stations Cellphones Impact on others (falling debris, exhaust fumes, etc )

8 Preparation for Annual Outage Cold outage. May 9-13. Power outages early on in week. Plan ahead Complete your safety training ahead of time. Website is available Can provide own sign up sheet for respective companies if we know ahead of time 3 Vehicles (with id) per company within gated areas. Notify PPD in advance if supervisors or safety reps come in and out or they may have to wait. No id, no entry. Fill out the sign in sheet completely including vehicle registration numbers. Know your SAPPI Contact. Have crew know name too. Make sure safety pre-plan is complete Verify lockouts If in doubt – ASK!

9 Preparing for Next Year New Safety Video – Dispose of any old copies now!! Website will have presentation and video. Plus link to submit paperwork.
