Endocrine System
2
Endocrine – “ductless glands” Secretions directly enter blood and travel to every body organ But not all cell respond…only target cells w/specific receptors Hormone signal molecule that binds to cell receptors Change cm permeability Synthesize proteins Stimulate mitosis Activate/inactivate enzymes Regulate long term or continuous processes
3
Stimuli Stimuli - activates the endocrine organs Most hormones regulated by neg feedback 3 types of stimuli: Hormonal Most common By other hormones Humoral Blood borne chems (ions/ nutrients) Neural By nerve fibers
4
Structural Classifications of Hormones Peptide Hormones Made of amino acids Initiate rapid changes in the body Stay in blood (broken down there) Bind to receptor to initiate 2 0 messenger inside cell Lipid Hormones (steroids) Made from cholesterol and fats Long lasting effects Broken down within a cell Used to regulate body fluid and sexual reproduction Diffuse through cell membrane of target cells
5
Organs of Endocrine System Pituitary Gland Pineal Gland Adrenal Gland Thyroid Parathyroid Pancreas Thymus Gonads Ovary Testis (Placenta)
6
Mapping the Endocrine System Create a poster of the body and draw all endocrine organs in their approximate locations For each endocrine gland and use arrows to indicate each of the hormones it secretes (name and abbreviation) and write its function, arrow should lead to the target organ
