2 The goddess of Echo-echo-echo-echo… ECHO

3 WHO IS ECHO? Echo was a dryad that lived in the forest She was a good friend of Aphrodite She had a beautiful voice; all the creatures of the forest begged for her to sing and read stories to them, and she did She did not love anyone until she met Narcissus

4 HER STORY One day, Echo and the other dryads/nymphs were having fun with Zeus in the forest, when his jealous wife Hera came looking for him. Echo chatted with Hera while Zeus and the nymphs and dryads went hiding. Echo told Hera he went to Mount Olympus, so she went back. Hera found out that Echo was lying, and cursed her. Her curse was only being able to say the last words of what she heard. Echo then saw Narcissus, and instantly fell in love, like all the other girls who saw him. She humiliated herself when she could only repeat the words at the end of the sentence. She asked Aphrodite to make her disappear. She wandered into a cave and repeated the last words she heard, forever…

5 WRITERS OF HER STORY The first edition of the story discovered so far was written by Parthenius of Nicaea, written about 50 B.C. This story ends with Narcissus committing suicide. The more well known story was written by Ovid, in 8 A.D. This one ends with Narcissus looking at himself for the rest of his life, becoming a flower. Both of the stories end with Echo repeating what he said to his reflection.
