Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator Reviews Caltrans Projects/ Liaison to Public and Agencies ◦Focus on walking, bicycling, and transit ◦Safety of bicyclists and pedestrians ◦Recommends best practices be implemented on Caltrans projects ◦Disseminates information throughout Caltrans District 11

District 11 Bicyclist and Pedestrian Advisory Committee o Information sharing and advisory group. o Caltrans staff and active transportation stakeholders in San Diego and Imperial counties. o Formed to help the district meet Caltrans goals to increase active transportation mode share. o Improve safety and customer service for active transportation users.

District 11 Bicyclist and Pedestrian Advisory Committee o Walking, bicycling, and community advocacy groups and local and regional agency representatives. o District staff include representatives from Planning, Traffic Operations, and Maintenance. o The committee meets quarterly at the District Office. o The first meeting was held in October, one in February and the next will be in May: Bike Month.

District 11 Bicyclist and Pedestrian Advisory Committee Topics Covered o Purpose and need of the BPAC o Identification of locations that need improvements o Camp Pendleton access for bicyclists o Caltrans Traffic Operations o I-5 North Coast Corridor Early Work Program CS enhancements o Bicycle Friendly Cities around the world

o First-ever California State Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. o A policy plan to support active modes of transportation. o Increase safe bicycling and walking in California. o Initiated by Caltrans Planning Deputies’ Planning Bike Task Force.

Get Involved o Focus groups, interactive community workshops, and regional summits. o Web-based survey is available on the project website at the project website (www.CAbikepedplan.org).www.CAbikepedplan.org o May 3 Regional Summit at District 11. Morning session for public agencies and afternoon session for advocates and members of the general public.

District 11 Adopt-A-Bike Path Program o Bike paths and trails will be eligible for adoption. o The program will be run by the District 11 Adopt-A-Highway Program. o The first routes have been identified and are ready for adoption: 2 segments along I-5 in the Camp Pendleton area and the SR-125 bike path near Grossmont College. More will be added as the program progresses. o District is developing a branding logo to identify adopters on signs to be located on paths and/or freeways. o Adoptable segments will be searchable on an online interactive map.

Recent Projects Pavement Rehabilitation in Imperial County o I-8 Corridor, between El Centro and the AZ state line. o Caltrans will accommodate bicycling upon completion: o On the shoulders of I-8 upon the completion of the project. o And/or improve Evan Hewes Highway, the parallel County road. o Shuttles or temporary paths will provide baseline service to bicyclists during construction.

Recent Projects SR-15 Commuter Bikeway in San Diego o Adjacent to SR-15 in Mid-City. o Connect Adams Ave. to Camino del Rio South. o Prior to project only access from Mid-City to Mission Valley were Bachman Place, Texas Street, and Fairmont Avenue. o Collaborative effort between SANDAG, Caltrans, and the City of San Diego. o 17 month project which began construction in March 2015.
