6 The University of Szeged traces its origins back to 1581 with the foundation of the Academia in Cluj (Kolozsvár). István Báthory, Prince of Transylvania, King of Poland (1571-1586), Grand Duke of Lithuania took measures to estabilish a Catholic university (academia – universitas) consisting of two faculitues, Arts and Theology.

7 University of Szeged In 1872 the Hungarian royal university was established and the university operated in Cluj until 1921 when it was moved to Szeged. 2000: the University is integrated with the higher education institutions of Szeged and Hódmezővásárhely into University of Szeged

15 Faculty of Agriculture The agricultural training in Hódmezővásárhely has a past of more than a hundred years The first agricultural school providing basic level education was founded in 1896 This school functioned until the end of World War II

16 Faculty of Agriculture It became an agricultural technical school which later, in 1961, was turned into a higher educational institute College education started in 1972 The college, after several reorganisations, became a faculty of the University of Szeged on 1st January, 2000

17 Education The Faculty provides agricultural and wildlife management engineer (BSc) training for  full time  part time (correspondence) students

18 Education Post-secondary education  animal husbandry  horticulture  environmental management  agricultural engineer  agrarian logistics  herb and spice production and processing  agricultural valuation  wildlife management

19 Education There are 6 + 1 semesters (BSc):  for full time students  for correspondence students There are 2-4 semesters for post-secondary students

20 Pilot farm The Pilot Farm of the Faculty was established in 1976 Its main purpose was to carry out scientific research and extension, beside training the students Its territory comes to a total of 451 hectares including 378 hectares of arable land

21 Pilot farm Plant production:  cereals  sunflower  maize  lucerne

22 Pilot farm Animal keeping farms:  The Dutch-type cattle farm was established in 1991. It has room for 50 milking cows and their calves. Its technology and structure represents a family enterprise  The dairy farm producing cheese, cottage cheese, yoghurt and cream also operates with Dutch technology

24 Pilot farm  The 30-sow pig farm was established by FUNKI technology in 2001  Sheep farming takes place on a farm modelling a New-Zealand system based on intensive grazing  The goat farm was established in 2000. It has room for 90 milking goat and their kid

26 Pilot farm  The poultry farm serves for one of the highlighted research programmes of the Faculty, which was designed to preserve the Hungarian speckled hen and the bare-neck hen without any gene loss

28 Research According to their specialization and the professional profile of the three institutes, students can be fully involved in the implementation and evaluation of experiments. They regularly participate and achieve succesful results in National Scientific Students’ Associations Conferences in various fields of agriculture

29 Extension Service On the commission of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development the Extension Centre of Csongrad County and South Great Plain Region has been operating at the College since 1999 Its main objective is to support the agricultural extension activities and to organise group-extensions (lecturers, presentations, information service) free of charge for the farmers
