A BRIEF RATIONALE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION

 Some research about language learning that relates to YOU (INTERLINK students particularly CS4)  Team Project 2 – Introduction to  Team Project 2 – A suggested three-week schedule  Questions from students  Video watching and discussion

 An intensive English program (IEP) that holds to a traditional approach curriculum model runs the risk of under preparing its graduates for the complex, integrated language tasks that their regular academic work will demand of them (Stoller, 1999).

 What is a traditional English teaching approach?  How can we reduce the risks of “under preparing” English language students for future academic work?

 The answer to this problem lies in a hybrid IEP curriculum, in which skill courses revolve around a core content element (Stoller, 1999 (again)).

 This is especially true for students at the college level, who are expected to deal with higher order cognitive tasks, such as summarizing and critiquing readings, synthesizing materials from various sources, evaluating others’ ideas, and applying theoretical concepts to solving problems (Blanton, 1995; Pally, 2000).

 Since you are intending to matriculate to a U.S. university this type of hybrid project is suitable for you. (INTERLINK CS4 course Mulvey, 2012).  research about efficacy of PBL or CBI research about efficacy of PBL or CBI

 Our second and final team project is an “hybrid” IEP Project.  Sustained and cooperative – lasting 3 weeks  Culminating in a 7 to 8 minute informative, well-researched and clearly organized symposium styled presentation about one of the freedoms guaranteed in The Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution.

 During this week, you are going to examine the scope and meaning of the First Amendment and how it applies not only to the press, but also to ordinary citizens.  After you have defined each of the rights protected by the First Amendment, you are going to identify First Amendment controversies that are making headlines.  You need to spend the next week clipping out/saving newspaper and other articles related to the First Amendment right that was assigned to you and the controversies surrounding it.  Prepare (make notes) to discuss this with your group and the class next Monday.

 A survey released in January 2005 found that one in three high school students believe the press ought to be more restricted.  The survey further revealed that when asked whether the press enjoys too much freedom, not enough or about the right amount, 32% answered too much, 37% said it has the right amount and 10% said it had too little (USA Today, 2005).  This week you are going to survey a minimum of 30 American students and pose the following questions/statements:

 How many freedoms are protected by the First Amendment?  Name as many of those freedoms as you can.  The First Amendment goes too far in the rights it guarantees. (answers: strongly agree; agree; disagree; strongly disagree; no opinion)  Overall, do you think the American press has too much freedom, too little freedom, or about the right amount of freedom?  Generate a fifth question related to the particular freedom you are researching.

 Compile the results of your survey, and convert the responses to into percentages.  Prepare (make notes) to discuss this with your group and the class next Monday.

 During the final week of this project, you will evaluate the results of your efforts and present your findings to classmates (possibly to others as well).  With your group members, develop a cohesive symposium presentation that explains the meaning of the freedom each of you were assigned to research.  You should highlight the current and past debates over the assigned freedom and present the results of your survey as team.

 Watch the Bill Of Rights Video 1 and Video 2 take notes.  Video 1 The Bill of Rights Part 1 Video 1  Video 2The Bill of Rights Part 2 Video 2  Video 3 (watch for homework – go to You Tube and search School House Rock “The Preamble”) Video 3
