2 Bus is the main way of public transport in the Canary Islands, yesterday and still today Buses in the middle of the fifties Nowadays, bus transport service in Gran Canaria is made by Municipal Bus Company in the city of Las Palmas (Yellow bus) and Global Company, which connects the rest of town and villages of the island (blue bus)

3 The first tram of Las Palmas, called 'La Pepa‘, started to work in 1893. It joined the harbour with Las Palmas, five kilometres far at that time. The last service of La Pepa took place in the beginning of the forties of the 20th century. 5 In 1888 the company Vapores Interinsulares Canarios was founded with the aim to connect the main islands of the Canary Islands by sea. The first trip took place on 6 th September 1888 when the two first 511 tons steam boats, "Viera y Clavijo” and "León y Castillo", arrived to our archipelago. They, and the other steam boats, played a remarkable participation in the development of the economy and communications among the islands since the end of 19th century until the earlier seventies of the 20th century “CORREILLOS”

6 People called these small steam boats “correillos” (diminutive of “correo”) because of their small size and because they were used to deliver the post (correo in Spanish) among the islands. The small steam boats fleet was completed with another ones like “La Palma”, “Fuerteventura”, “Lanzarote” and “Gomera” Correillo La Palma

7 FAST FERRIES Nowadays, modern fast ferries connect the islands in about an hour and it is the favourite way of travelling for the Canarian people Not only people or cars use these fast ferries, but also lorries to transport goods among the islands

8 LAS PALMAS HARBOUR YESTERDAY Las Palmas harbour is the main one of the Canary Islands. It was made with the support of two brothers, Fernando and Juan León y Castillo, two islanders, at the end of 19th century. The first was a minister of the Spanish government and the other one was an engineer. Because of the strategic location of the island, British businessmen invested lots of money in it. 9 LAS PALMAS HARBOUR TODAY Las Palmas harbour is one of the most important ones in Spain and because of its strategic location, it is a compulsory scale for all types of boats in their route towards Africa, America or Europe. Its docks occupy about 14 kilometres and it is still growing nowadays. It is connected with more than a hundred harbours all over the world

11 FLYING IN THE CANARY ISLANDS TODAY A regional air company, called BINTER, flies among the island using a modern fleet of ATR 72 which allows us to travel in a comfortable way in less than an hour in the longest flights
