MUSIC More Than Arts Enrichment
2
Research shows that students who take music lessons do better academically, and show improved physical and mental health. ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
3
What are some of these specific research results? ? ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
4
Medical Research over the past few years has discovered a direct relationship between actively playing music and enhanced reasoning and brain activity. It has also been discovered that music education at a very young age can be instrumental in “hard- wiring” the brain for advanced reasoning. ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
5
In essence, most of what this research supports is the fact that active participation in music helps develop a very special type of intellectual process. ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net

( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net Language-Analytical reasoning is part of active music participation, as it is part of many day-to-day activities. Many aspects of music are purely sequential and logical. However, Playing Music, more than any other activity, requires also a large amount of spatial-temporal reasoning, which is the very type of reasoning required for advanced math, science, economics, architecture, and more. Playing Music is one of the most effective tools in developing that capacity in students. Language-Analytical Spatial-Temporal
13
How does Playing Music help develop either Language-Analytical or Spatial-Temporal Reasoning Skills? ? ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net

16
Reading the music, however, is only part of the process. Transferring the information to your hands and playing the instrument requires even more spatial-temporal reasoning skills! ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net

Math & Science Music happens in time and sub-divisions of time. Concepts of a whole note and its “fractions” of ½ note, 1/4 notes, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128 notes are mathematical concepts. Music students must learn very early on to deal with fractions and to compute fractions as they read and perform music. As music is a truly multi-sensory learning activity, students are able to grasp these mathematical concepts much quicker than by conventional academic methods. Concepts are applied and “experienced”, rather than discussed in the abstract. Other examples of applied math include calculations regarding the speed of music as it is expressed in beats per minute, such as 77 beats per minute. ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
21
Math & Science Science concepts are explored and applied constantly as a student learns about the actual “physics” of playing an instrument and producing sound, and learns to manipulate the different mechanics and physical forces when playing music. Again, as music is a truly multi-sensory learning activity, students are able to grasp these science concepts much quicker than by conventional academic methods. Playing a musical instrument requires knowledge about, and is an activity that incorporates concepts of, velocity, wind pressure, inertia, momentum, displacement in time, and more. ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
22
Math & Science Playing an instrument, however, is not only about manipulating the mechanics and applying concepts of physics. It also requires advanced exploration of human biology. Wind instrument students must learn about the human respiratory system and how it is used to play a trumpet or flute. Piano, drum students and other instrumental students learn about various parts of the body, such as hands and arms, muscle mechanism and tendons, and learn about taking care of their bodies, etc. Vocal students engage in advanced exploration of the human respiratory system, larynx, lungs, diaphragm, and more so they can apply that advanced knowledge in making music. ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
23
Math & Science Regardless of instrument, the nature and physics of sound, the study of acoustics, resonance, sound waves and reflection, or the behavior of sound in space, exploration of different materials and their acoustic properties, etc., are all part of a thorough music curriculum. Again, these concepts are studied not in the abstract, as with many conventional educational settings, but these concepts are explored in real life and empirical data is collected through the process of learning and playing music. ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
24
Music is present all around us and all over the planet. It is intrinsically tied to the culture and human essence of a people. Music is part of the arts. As such it uses the same aesthetic values as other art forms of the day and is a reflection of society, its socio-economic make-up, its values, its developmental stage and more. Music is part of history. A people’s personality, values and aspirations are reflected in music. Music changes with the times, as technology and socio-economics change. History & Social Studies MUSIC and HISTORY ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
25
Music Students explore music not only from different historic time periods within Western Civilization, they also explore music from different time periods in other civilizations. A discussion of historic time periods and cultures is an integral part of music education. This knowledge helps the student in their correct performance and interpretation of specific music. History is actually brought to life through music! It is not being studied in the abstract, but explored, experienced and re-interpreted in music. History & Social Studies ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
26
Music is obviously part of the arts. As such it represents the same values and aesthetic principles of a civilization as the other art forms, such as visual arts, architecture, dance, etc. It also uses similar techniques and concepts as other art forms. The basic elements of painting or the visual arts, for instance, include the concepts of … lines form color space texture The Arts MUSIC and the ARTS ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
27
( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net Similarly, learning music explores the same compositional tools and elements such as musical form (verse, chorus, ABA form, etc.), the use of refrain (melodic refrains, repetition of patterns), color (instrumental color, volume, harmony and modality (major, minor, etc.), spatial distribution of musical events (pitch relationships in time), as well as texture (homophonic, polyphonic compositional writing style, etc.). The Romantic period in art focused on the individual, and form was secondary. Similarly, Romantic music is about personal emotions. Traditional forms are of little importance. The Arts
28
Classical art established strong notions of structure and form. The aesthetic values of classical architecture and visual arts are reflected in the very specific structure of musical forms such as the Symphony (structure of 4 movements (sections) of specific tempos and musical form), the sonata, and others. Baroque music in turn reflected the values of the ornate “royal court” and the “church”, just as paintings and architecture of the day did. Different countries in Europe had different styles of music. Different continents have vastly different types of music and instruments, just as their other art forms are different and specific to each region. Music is Arts Education. The Arts ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net

Music is about story-telling. It follows similar concepts as Language Arts and Creative Writing. An idea is presented, developed and summarized. Most forms of writing adhere to a three-part or three-act structure. In music students are exposed to the concept of story-telling as an integral part of understanding music. Music lessons very often include creative composition or improvisation activities, which provide opportunities for students to explore story-telling both on a musical level and on a linguistic level when the creation of lyrics is incorporated. 38
Learning Music requires discipline and a commitment to a regular practice routine. The results of sticking “with it” are readily obvious, which in turn helps students adopt that type of skill or behavior quite easily. Many students are likely to apply the same study habits when it comes to other subjects, thereby, getting into the habit of simply doing better academically. Training in Discipline & Study Habits

40
( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net All students learn differently and many have a strong creative side that needs to be acknowledged and challenged. A diet of pure academics only helps alienate them from education altogether. Music provides a creative outlet that is completely acceptable. Music is part of our entire culture, including teen pop culture. It is “cool” to play music, students adore bands and musicians. At the same time, playing music is a creative outlet that is structured, requires consistent study habits and provides extensive residual benefit. MUSIC: A Creative Outlet
41
Residual benefit in this context refers to music as a specialized skill that a student has acquired and will be able to use all through life. Learning music requires commitment and exceptional study skills, skills that are important throughout education and life. MUSIC: A Creative Outlet ( 866)793-9394 musicstaracademy.net
