1
Goals for Today: 1.Identify the relationship between color and design using the color wheel 2.Give examples of color harmonies
2
Psychological Effects of Color Red –Power, danger, fire, strength, passion –Bold, aggressive, exciting, and warm –Demands attention and creates energetic feelings Orange –Hopeful, cheerful, warm, and less aggressive than red –Expresses courage and hospitality –Makes a room feel energetic and friendly Yellow –Friendly, happy, and warm –Associated with sympathy, sunlight, prosperity, cowardice and wisdom –Yellow rooms are cheerful, light, and airy however pure yellow draws attention because of it’s brightness so be careful with using large amounts of yellow in rooms
3
Green –Refreshing, friendly, cool, and peaceful –Associated with hope, luck, and envy –Works well with other colors, especially white (and gold, ha ha) =) Blue –Cool, quiet, and reserved –Associated with tranquility, serenity, and formality –Can create a sense of soothing and peace –Works well with white, but too much blue can appear depressing Violet –Dignified, mysterious, and dramatic –Works well with most other colors
4
Black –Sophisticated, mysterious, and dramatic –Associated with wisdom, evil, and death –Small amounts in a room create a crisp appearance however large amounts can appear oppressive White –Fresh, peaceful, and pure –Associated with youth, innocence, and faith –Small amounts create a crisp and lively appearance
5
Color WheelColor Wheel Primary Colors –Red, Yellow, Blue Secondary Colors –Orange, Green, Purple Intermediate Colors (Tertiary) –Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue- Green, Blue-Violet, and Red-Violet Warm Colors –Yellow, orange, red Cool Colors –Blue, green, violet
6
Color TermsColor Terms Hue –Name of the color Value –Lightness or darkness of a hue Intensity –Brightness or dullness of a hue Complement –Opposite on the color wheel
7
Color HarmoniesColor Harmonies Monochromatic –Single hue from the standard color wheel –Variation in hue in created by using different values or intensities of the hue –Neutrals can be added to add interest –This color harmony can make a room appear larger and can unify the furnishings and accessories in the space
9
Color Harmonies Analogous –Three to five hues that are next to each other on the color wheel –When using this color harmony, choose one color to be the dominant color and use smaller amounts of the others to add interest and variety along with tiny amounts of unrelated colors as an accent.
11
Color Harmonies Complementary Color Harmony (contrasting) –Created by selecting two colors that are directly opposite of each other on the color wheel –Can make a room look bright and dramatic –Vary the values and intensities to lessen the contrast in a room –The more one color is allowed to dominate the other, the less the contrast is noticed
13
Color Harmonies Split-Complementary Color Harmony –One hue is used with the two hues adjacent to it’s compliment
14
Color Harmonies Double-Complementary Color Harmony –Choose 2 colors and their complements from the color wheel
15
Color Harmonies Triadic Color Harmony –Uses any 3 colors that are equally distant from each other on the color wheel
16
Using Color in Design Moods & Styles –Cool colors create restful mood whereas warm colors can create a feeling of excitement –Southwestern styles usually have warm desert colors such as rust, orange and beige –Country styles use low intensity shades of reds, blues, oranges, and yellows Lifestyles –Always consider the lifestyles of the person or persons using the rooms
17
Using Color in Design Items in the room –You can use color with the objects that are placed in the room. This can include furniture, pictures, linens, etc. –Consider the type of lighting used in the room because the colors you choose must work well in day and night (natural light vs. artificial light)
18
Using Color in Design Location of room –Consider the direction the room faces –If rooms are located on the northern exposure, the light may make the room appear warmer –If rooms are located on the southern exposure, which receives the most sunlight, will make colors appear bright and warmer –Consider the colors of the adjoining rooms as the colors should blend together well Review information on pages 240-241 of your textbook on how to use color correctly
19
Writing Activity Write one paragraph (5 sentences) describing your favorite color and why you like it so much. How does it make you feel? Write 2 paragraphs describing the colors in your room. What is the mood or feeling of the room? Do you like these colors? Why or why not? How does color affect you?
