THE CONCEPT OF COLOR & COLOR MODELS
2
COLOR The perception of color is achieved by a complex process that starts in the retina and it will be finalized in the visual cortex and associative areas of the brain. Light is electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye, and is responsible for the sense of sight. Color vision is the capacity of an organism to distinguish objects based on the wavelengths of the light they reflect, emit, or transmit.
3
WHAT DO WE NEED TO SEE THE COLOR? 1.A source of light 2.An object (to reflect) 3.A visioner (human eye)
4
1. SOURCE OF LIGHT The visible spectrum is the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye. Color categories and physical specifications of color are also associated with objects, materials, light sources, etc., based on their physical properties such as light absorption, reflection, or emission spectra.
5
2. AN OBJECT Objects transform the lights. Pigments in the objects sometimes reflect different wavelenghts, sometimes transmit them. Those reflected are perceived by our eyes as colors.
6
3. VISIONER Physically, objects can be said to have the color of the light leaving their surfaces, which normally depends on the spectrum of the incident illumination and the reflectance properties of the surface, as well as potentially on the angles of illumination and viewing. Some objects not only reflect light, but also transmit light or emit light themselves, which contribute to the color also. And a viewer's perception of the object's color depends not only on the spectrum of the light leaving its surface, but also on a host of contextual cues, so that the color tends to be perceived as relatively constant: that is, relatively independent of the lighting spectrum, viewing angle, etc.
7
RGB COLOR MODEL The RGB color model is an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light is added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colors. RGB colors are known as primary additives because when combined in equal amounts they produce white. The main purpose of the RGB color model is for the sensing, representation, and display of images in electronic systems, such as televisions and computers.
8
CMYK COLOR MODEL The CMYK color model is used in the printing process. The four-color printing process uses four printing plates; one for cyan, one for magenta, one for yellow and one for black. When the colors are combined on paper (they are actually printed as small dots), the human eye sees the final image.
