The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Psalm 23: 1-3

1. Know the condition of your flock Follow the status of your people as well as the status of your work. Get to know your flock, one sheep at a time. Engage your people on a regular basis. Keep your eyes and ears open, question, and follow through.

2. Discover the shape of your sheep.
7
S trengths, H eart, A ttitude, P ersonality, E xperiences Your choice of sheep can make flock management easier or harder. Start with healthy sheep, or you’ll inherit someone else’s problems. Know the S-H-A-P-E of your sheep to make sure they’re in the right fold.
8
3. Help your sheep identify with you.
9
Build trust with your followers (model authenticity, integrity, compassion). Set high standards for performance. Communicate your values and mission Define the cause and tell them where they fit in. Great leadership is personal, not just professional.
10
4. Make your pasture a safe place.
11
Keep your people well informed. Infuse every position with importance. Cull chronic instigators from flock Rotate sheep to fresh pastures. Reassure the sheep by staying visible. Don’t give problems time to fester.
12
5. The staff of direction.
13
5. The staff of direction Know where you’re going, get out in front, keep your flock on the move. Use persuasion rather than coercion Give freedom of movement, but define the fence-line. (boundaries vs. bridles) When in trouble, go get them out. Reminder: failure isn’t fatal.

18
7. The heart of the shepherd Great leadership is lifestyle, not a technique Decide every day who is going to pay for your leadership (you or your people) Most of all have a heart for your sheep.

He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young. Isaiah 40:11
