UWE Sustainability in Bristol European Green capital year

What is the university’s approach? Sustainability is central to: how we work the systems and structures we use the services we deliver  so everything from eg green building design, recycling and re-use systems to sustainability education for students. How good are we? In 2012/3 we were 31st in People & Planet Green League out of 158. Still first class but could do better.

How is UWE going forward? New sustainability strategy: Positive footprint 2020 Breakthrough indicators: o 80% recycling rate; currently 56% o integrated ecosystem in grounds o 30% reduction in carbon in supply chain for goods o 50% reduction in energy usage from 2001 o building design to highest standard o staff and student support - SU 50 green leaders this year

Putting policy into practice: dynamic culture Grounds: increase in plants which are perfect for pollinators: eg chamomile lawn, introducing meadow grasses and cutting mowing Recycling: focus on food waste prevention and recycling of food waste Cycling: new UWE centric cycle route maps, free repairs, offer of free bikes to students, more showers and cycle racks; repairs training, Catering: all organic milk, all meat Red Tractor or organic, all fish certified MSC or similar– currently 80%, seasonal dishes from local products

UWE staff : where do you fit in? Your role is to play your part in creating a sustainable culture here, to be a role model for students and other staff.... Take a minute to work out what you care about and have control over and what choices and changes you can make.

UWE staff : do the basics, get in the habit. Do everything from basics, eg switching off computer screen to buying Fairtrade and local food option. Get into new habits and make the changes second nature. 3 key campaigns for 2015 – e storage of documents, food waste prevention and recycling, and cycling!

Recycling: a resource for the future. UWE sent 1000 tonnes of rubbish to landfill last year: equivalent to filling 4 Olympic sized swimming pools. UWE overall recycling rate 61%; offices 80% - you can aim for 93% Student /public space rate of 30% => contamination a big problem.

Recycling: a resource for the future. What you can do: recycle and re-use! New initiatives – kitchen waste collection; coffee cup reduction Recycling costs £4.00 per cubic metre and landfill costs £10. Food waste produces methane – 27 times more polluting UWE's recycled materials collected by a local company and recycled into eg cardboard boxes, wheelie bins and drinks cans; food waste goes to make compost

Energy: cutting usage, combatting climate change. Energy usage at UWE responsible for: 15,000 tonnes CO 2 per year = to production of 18 million loaves of bread and costs over £3 million per year. Overall aims: 50% cut from 2001 levels by 2020 – on target; carbon neutral campus by 2040 with budgets devolved to departments.

Energy: cutting usage, combatting climate change. What you can do: Switch off stuff. Just do it, it’s easy. Room management service checking teaching rooms in the mornings and on Fridays: 18.00 – 21.00 Student accommodation – shorter showers campaign E storage of documents campaign

Travel: changing habits, cutting pollution. 35% of UWE’s carbon footprint comes from commuter travel, much of it by car. Try ditching the car and walk, cycle, take the bus or train. UWE’s 2014 travel challenge results: leaving from mid way up Gloucester Road at 8.15am in rush hour traffic just over 3 kms away. Electric bike - 15 minutes Motorcyclist - 16 minutes Cyclist - 22 minutes Runner - 23 minutes Bus - 34 minutes Car - 48 minutes Walker - 51 minutes The choice is yours!

Travel: changing habits, cutting pollution. UWE staff – better travel choices : walk, cycle car share or go by train or bus; Gloucs Road cycle train. UWE invests nearly £400,000 per year in cycling facilities and a subsidised bus service Wessex Red. www.wessexred.com www.wessexred.com Low cost - just £299 for an annual pass on Wessex Red. All UWE staff are entitled to apply for an annual interest free season ticket loan. Contact HR. Cyclescheme: buy a tax free bike, saves 32% of cost. 13 Sustainable Procurement at UWE UWE spends £55m pa on goods and services (excluding construction) When making purchasing decisions, consider: Do you need to buy it? Can you hire it rather than buy it? Can you get it through WARP-IT? If you need to buy it Use a local supplier Consider the energy rating / carbon footprint / lifecycle Consider any other sustainability credentials eg Fairtrade, FSC Key contact Andrew Parsons in the Procurement Team
