What are we currently doing?

Current Good Practice A wildlife meadow with raised beds was planted on site by the students. The Facilities staff, along with the adult evening Plumbing group and others, have fitted a Solar Thermal system within the Construction block and Museum street. The Facilities team have fitted a Solar PV system in the construction block and this now generates electricity that we sell to our energy supplier. They have also fitted a rainwater harvesting rig with the learners that collects rainwater from the roof to wash the brickwork tools saving 32,000 litres of drinking water per year. The Brickwork section has also had plastic curtains fitted to retain heat. All the buildings have been fitted with ‘Smart Meters’ and this helps assess energy use by ongoing measurement. All buildings have a reduced DEC (display energy certificate) and the Facilities staff are constantly looking at ways to improve and save energy in buildings reducing our carbon footprint. The Facilities staff and I are on hand to take staff, learners and visitors around to visit the work so far for the purpose of the above. check out the “Green College” website.
