Unit 3: Handout 3 Cellular Organization
2
Organization: Unicellular: Colonial: Multicellular:
3
Multicellular organization: Cell: The smallest unit of life Tissues: A group of similar cells that carry out a common function. Organ: Several types of tissue that interact to perform a specific function. Organ System: A group of organs that work together to perform a set of related tasks. Organism: a group of organ systems

Life Organization Cells Tissues Organs Organ systems Organism
5
Types of Tissues: 1.Epithelial Tissue: Lining tissue, Protection and secretion; example, Cheek Cell
6
Types of Tissues 2 Ciliated Epithelial Tissue - Lining tissue- Found in trachea and ova duct
7
Types of Tissues 3. Skeletal Muscle Tissue – Striated (striped). - Moves the skeleton.
8
Types of Tissues 4. Smooth Muscle Tissue – found on walls of internal organs and blood vessels a.k.a. visceral muscle tissue Peristalsis-rhythmic contraction of smooth muscle in digestive system
9
Types of Tissues 5. Cardiac Muscle Tissue: found the heart, also striated
10
Types of Tissues 6. Nerve Tissue: – found Brain and Spinal Cord, transmits impulses to the brain, spinal cord, muscle of gland
11
Types of Tissues 7. Red Blood Cells – Red (RBCs) function carry oxygen to cells - contains Hemoglobin (Fe) No nucleus in humans
12
Sickle cell anemia an inherited condition which results in some RBCs being malformed. These cells are not able to carry adequate amounts of oxygen to cells.
13
Types of Tissues 8. White Blood Cells - (WBCs) function in Immunity - multi-nucleated
14
Types of Tissues 9. Blood Tissue – Platelets function Blood clotting
15
Types of Tissues 10. Fat Tissue: Fat storage, insulation and cushioning
16
Types of Tissue 10. Connective tissue: -holds tissue and organs together -covers tendons and ligaments
