Chapter 45.1 The Human Body Plan Body Tissues
2
Biological Structural Organization
3
Body Tissues Tissue: a collection of cells that are similar in structure and that work together to perform a particular function 4 Types of Tissues: Muscle Nervous Epithelial Connective
4
Muscle Tissue Made up of cells that can CONTRACT Three Types of Muscle Tissue: Skeletal-moves the bones in the trunk, limbs, and face Smooth-handles body functions that you cannot control consciously Cardiac-found in the heart-pumps blood through your body
5
Muscle Tissue
6
Nervous Tissue Made up of cells that receive and transmit messages by electrical impulses These cells are called NEURONS Nervous tissue makes up the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and can be found in some sensory organs
7
Epithelial Tissue Consists of layers of cells that COVER all internal and external body surfaces Cells are tightly bound together to form a protective barrier for the surfaces they cover Some functions: Protection Secretion Absorption Diffusion
8
Epithelial Tissues Types of epithelial tissue according to their number of layers: 1. simple-one cell thick 2. stratified-two or more cells thick 3. pseudostratified-appears stratified due to thelocations of the nuclei, but is actually simple Types of epithelial tissue according to their shape of cells: 1. squamous-flat (think squashed!) 2. cubodial-square 3. columnar-tall, rectangular
9
Types of Epithelial Tissues
10
Connective Tissue Tissue that binds, supports, and protects structures in the body Most abundant and diverse out of all the tissue types 5 Major Types of Connective Tissue: Bone Cartilage Tendons Adipose (fat) Blood
11
Connective Tissue
12
Tissues Gone Bad
13
Skin Cancer
15
Lung Cancer
16
Lung cancer is the 4 th leading cause of death in the U.S.
17
Leukemia Cancer of the blood or bone marrow Bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells Due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors
