John 20:31 At the cross, the justice of God meets the mercy of God demonstrating the complete righteousness of God demanding that we give glory to God.

21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 3:21-26

John 20:31 The Righteousness of God cannot be attained by works under the Law APPLICATION: 1.No one can earn favor with God. 2.His plan is now made manifest. It was never an after thought, but always His original intention. 3.We all have sinned (past tense with continuing consequences) and we all fall short (present tense meaning continually) of God’s glory. 4.Our only hope is grace found by faith in Jesus Christ.

John 20:31 Redemption: To redeem or to ransom is to buy back with a price. The Old Testament examples of liberating Israel from Egypt and the Kinsmen Redeemer in Ruth as well as Hosea should come to mind. Romans 3:21-26

John 20:31 We pay nothing. It is a free gift. God on the other hand pays the ransom with the blood of Christ.

John 20:31 John Calvin and other Reformers held that sin is a violation of God’s law and justice. Christ’s death was a vicarious or substitutionary death, which satisfied God’s demand of justice for sin. In addition to being called the Penal Substitutionary view, this view is known as Vicarious Atonement. This was the most accepted view among Protestants until the Enlightenment and is central in Evangelical thinking. (see John Stott, The Cross of Christ; Leon Morris, The Cross in the New Testament; J. I. Packer, introduction to The Death of Death in the Death of Christ by John Owen). John 11:50-52; Roman 5:8-9; Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 3:18. Penal Substitutionary Atonement
