5 The School Curriculum Principals and teachers need to be able to show what it is that they want their students to learn and how their curriculum is designed to achieve this. They need to able to communicate this to the parents/caregivers. Flexibility and individuality in approaches.

6 The School Curriculum Students are helped to build on existing learning and take it to higher levels. Each student’s ultimate learning success is more important than the covering of particular achievement objectives

7 The School Curriculum The primary purpose of Assessment is to improve students’ learning and teachers’ teaching. Parents have a right to know how this is being done.

8 Reporting to Parents Parent Meetings – e.g.meet the teacher, special purpose, Newsletters – school wide, specific purposes Interviews/conferences School community events and celebrations Online Communication – websites, email trains, blogs Written reports Face to face – “in the carpark” or on the sideline during school events

11 Successful Strategies Parents have a right to be kept informed of the progress that their children are making and of events that involve them Stay within the school’s expectations Keeping records of everything Do not make assumptions – written communication provides you and them with the records The personal touch goes a long way – i.e face to face, phone calls Listening without judgement Parents who contact you do so because they want information – it is not necessarily easy for them to do this
