Sound Buttons This is a whiteboard activity that encourages the children to think carefully about each sound they can hear in a word. Good

Phoneme Frame This can be a fun activity on paper or using whiteboards. Split the board into however many sounds the words have you are going to ask the children to segment.

Sound Bingo Children choose 3 or more words from a list. They write them on their whiteboards/paper. Teacher sound talks the words. The children have to listen to the sounds and blend them together to make the word. If they have the word they tick it off. The child to cross all 3 words is the winner and must read all the words back to the rest of the class. Stop wait back trip sock Seen fight track good stool

Yes or No Question Game Children are given questions that they need to read and comprehend in order to answer yes or no. Could you carry an elephant on your head? Would you wave a magic wand? Has a cat got sharp claws? Could you fly to Mars on a bike?

Sentence Substitute Write a sentence on the whiteboard. Children read the sentence with their partners. Rub out one word in the sentence and substitute a different word. Children can write the sentence on their whiteboards and substitute a different word also. You can see clowns at a circus. Elephants watch market acrobats

Phoneme Spotter Stories A Real Treat! Tom was very happy. It was the weekend and he was off to the beach with Mum and Dad, his puppy and baby Pete. “Help me pack the green bag,” said Mum. “We need sun cream and lots to eat.” Tom got into his seat in the back of the car and the puppy got on his knee. Pete held his toy sheep. Off they went. Beep! Beep! At the end of the street there was a big truck. It had lost a wheel. “Oh, no,” said Tom. “We’ll be here for a week!” Dad went to speak to the driver to see if he could help. They put the wheel back on. Then Dad said, “I must hurry. We need to get to the beach.” At last they got to the sea. Tom and Pete had an ice-cream. Mum and Dad had a cup of tea. The puppy went to sleep under a tree.

What’s in the box? Display a word. Go through the letter recognition and blending process. Ask a child to find the object in the box.

Countdown Display a list of words on IWB. The children take it in turns to sound talk the letters and read the word. Repeat with the next word and the next child. See how many they can read in one minute. Chop Chin Chug Check Such Chip Chill Much Rich
