Definition of appositives and examples An appositive is a noun, noun phrase, or series of nouns placed next to another word or phrase to identify or rename it. Examples: ▪ Mrs. Bowman,my teacher, teaches language arts. My teacher is identifying Mrs. bowman ▪ My sister,Mary, got a puppy. My sister is identifying Mary ▪ Sam got a new book, The Lighting Thief.
