Food insecurity: the facts There are approximately 2 billion people in the world who depend on smallholder farming, living on 500,000 smallholder farms Half of the world’s hungry people are estimated to live on small farms 30 million smallholder farmers produce most of the world’s coffee and cocoa. Over 90 percent of the world’s cocoa and 80 percent of the world’s coffee is grown by smallholders About 795 million people are undernourished globally 3

Make it count so farmers can feed their families Fairtrade fortnight will focus on issues of food security in 2016. it’s a sad irony that millions of farmers and workers who are feeding the world are themselves going hungry When people are paid a fairer price they can have more control over their lives when times are hard, and worry less about how they will feed their families Fairtrade means many farmers and workers are able to fulfil a basic human need – to put enough food on the table for the people they care about, all year round 4
