6th Grade Science Review USE your online textbook to help you complete the PowerPoint! If the type is BLUE it is done! If it is in BLACK add what is needed then change the font color and delete the directions. When you finish the slide then go to the next slide until you are done! Name! Period! PICTURE/IMAGE!

Steps of the Scientific Method Add a FLOW CHART of the STEPS here! – Open the Internet browser! – Use the HMS Library site “Image Quest” – Type into the search bar what you are looking for “Cow” – Find an image you like use “shift-command-4” to create a screen shot. Or open it and drag it to the desktop. – Drag the screen shot onto your PowerPoint!

Controls & Variables Control - Define Variables - Define Explain what the control and Variable was in the experiment we did in class where we “DROPPED water on a PENNY”! “TOOLS” - List them: what did you need to have to do this experiment?

BIAS & EXPERIMENTAL ERROR Soda TASTE TEST experiment: In this experiment students picked their favorite soda. The testers had four types of soda to pick from (coke, mtn. dew, root beer, 7up) but they only had one soda (root beer) that students could taste! Students picked Root beer as their favorite! What is Bias? Explain: What type of experimental error could occur? Explain: Find an image you like that helps explain this slide. Use “shift-command-4” to create a screen shot.

Example of BIAS Understanding Bias Read the following report: Pigeons are dirtier than you think. They eat trash and leave their droppings wherever they go. Pigeons also carry diseases. One time, I was bitten by a pigeon when I tried to shoo it away. I had to get a shot because the pigeon might have given me a disease. Can you tell how this writer feels about pigeons? Do you wonder if this is the whole story about pigeons? Does the writer say anything positive about pigeons? For instance, he or she could have mentioned that pigeons are very successful at living around people. It appears that the writer has a strong opinion about pigeons and that facts may not change that opinion. What Is Bias? One kind of bias is a strong opinion about something. You can be biased in favor of something or biased against it. In either case, you may have some facts to support your position, but a bias is based more on feelings and opinions than on facts. In some cases, bias results from a person’s past experiences. That may be what happened to the student who was bitten by the pigeon. Bias Can Be Intentional or Unintentional Sometimes people use bias on purpose. For example, if you want to persuade someone, you present facts that support your position while leaving out points that don’t. If you want your parents to order pizza for dinner, you might remind them that they wouldn’t have to cook. However, you probably wouldn’t mention that healthier, less expensive dinner options might be available. Another kind of bias is unintentional. It occurs when a person tries to be accurate but does not have complete information

Graphing Data & Faulty Interpretations! Of the 30 students tested: 18 liked root beer best, 7 liked coke and 3 liked Mtn. Dew, 2 liked 7up! What is a BAD conclusion that could be made from the experiment data? Explain? WHY? Create a graph of the DATA: To change #’s in graph CLICK ON GRAPH so BLUE line around graph appears Go to EDIT Select DATA in Excel, and put in correct numbers! Then “Save Layout, Save, close then new numbers appear!

THE Engineering Design Process ! Add a FLOW CHART of the STEPS here! –(On Line Text pg. 25) Library image search on image quest! – Type into the search bar what you are looking for “ Engineering Design Process Flow Char t” – Find an image you like use “shift-command-4” to create a screen shot. – Drag the screen shot onto your PowerPoint!

THE BEST PENCIL PROTOTYPE! (On Line Text pg. 24) What would the BEST pencil have that would make it better than a regular pencil? List Design details/improvements! How would you test each pencil to determine the BEST? List steps/methods! Find an image you like that helps explain what the best pencil would look like. Use “shift-command-4” to create a screen shot.

INTENDED Benefits / UNINTENDED Consequences (On Line Text pg. 26/27) Think about the AUTOMOBILE: Name some BENEFITS (intended by the designers) – 1 – 2 – 3 Name some Consequences (NOT intended) – 1 – 2 – 3

Adaptive and Assistive BIO engineering! (On Line Text pg. 28) EXPLAIN each then give an example ! Adaptive Bioengineering – Define: Example Image Assistive Bioengineering – Define: Example Image What does BIO mean?

INTERDEPENDENCE HOW WE NEED OTHER LIVING THINGS & RESOURCES TO SURVIVE (On Line Text pg. 48)

ORGANISMS and their JOBS Give an example and explain the JOB of each type of organism! Then add picture if you have time! PRODUCER (On Line Text pg. 52/53) – Example – Job CONSUMER – Example – Job DECOMPOSER – Example – Job SCAVENGER – Example – Job

Biotic and Abiotic (On Line Text pg. 48) BIOtic – Define – Example Image Abiotic – Define – Example Image

Environmental Organization (On Line Text pg. 49) Describe the 5 Levels of Environmental Organization – Finish the words then explain each add a picture if you have time! Largest = B E C P Smallest = O

FOOD CHAINS (On Line Text pg. 52) FOOD CHAINS – Define – Image – List the organisms in your chain!

FOOD WEBS (On Line Text pg. 54 & 50) FOOD WEB – Define – Image – List the organisms in your web! – HOW is your WEB different from your CHAIN? – How would one organism rely upon another in your WEB?

ENERGY PYRAMID ENERGY PYRAMID (On Line Text pg. 55/56) – Define – Image – List the organisms in your ENERGY PYRAMID! – HOW is your ENERGY moved through the ENERGY PYRAMID? – Where is most of the ENERGY found in an ENERGY PYRAMID?

Biomes & Ecosystems What is a BIOME? (On Line Text pg. 94) Name 4 major LAND BIOMES and a dominate biotic and abiotic element of each: – 1 Name:Biotic Factor: Abiotic Factor – 2 Name:Biotic Factor: Abiotic Factor – 3 Name:Biotic Factor: Abiotic Factor – 4 Name:Biotic Factor: Abiotic Factor

Ecosystems (On Line Text pg. 102/108) What is a Ecosystem? How is an Ecosystem different from a BIOME? Name 2 LAND Ecosystems and 2 Water Ecosystems : – 1 Name:Biotic Factor: Abiotic Factor – 2 Name:Biotic Factor: Abiotic Factor – 3 Name:Biotic Factor: Abiotic Factor – 4 Name:Biotic Factor: Abiotic Factor

Symbiotic Relationships Name the 3 types and explain how it is good or bad for each organism! Give an example! Mu (On Line Text pg. 62) – EX.: – Good for Comm – EX.: – Good for Para – EX.: – Good for
