2 Grammar Snippet: Complex Sentences 10/27/15 A complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. – Ex: Jerry’s mother bends her usual rules so that her son can have fun on vacation. In the example, the underlined portion is the dependent clause introduced by the subordinating conjunction “so that.” Punctuation: – If the independent clauses comes first, do NOT separate the clauses with a comma. – If the dependent clause comes first, then place a comma between the two clauses.
