2
Agenda Mid-term recap Finalized design Sub-system overview Engineering Analysis French fry box modifications Operational procedures for prototype and design Prototyping issues Future improvements
3
Recall – Problem Statement Inefficiencies in the current cooked French fry dispensing process at fast food restaurants. Goal is to produce an automated cooked French fry dispensing system that will be cost and time efficient
4
Recall – Midterm Presentation Design
5
Reasons for Not Selecting Original Design Fries were getting excessively damaged when the second arm topped off the box Machine size was too big to fit in the current space at fast food restaurants Not fast enough Capital intensive due to greater modifications needed
6
New Design
7
Selected Design Scooper Grease Pan Arms Connecting Rod Motor Containment Unit Drainage Holes
8
Containment Unit Consists of: Grease Pan Drawer Collects excess grease from French Fries Ramp Collects French fries Drainage holes Side Walls Prevents fries from exiting base Provides support for scooper arms
9
Arm Subsystem Consists of: Two L-beams Connecting rod Connecting pins for scooper and arms Counterweights
10
Scooper Subsystem Consists of: Carton Holder Side walls Dividers
11
Engineering Analysis Important considerations for the design Free body diagram Motor Selection Bearing Selection System failure due to buckling
12
Engineering Analysis – Maximum Stresses 424 kPa 1.35 e-006 kPa
13
Engineering Analysis - Maximum Deformation 3.82e-3 in 0 in
14
Operation Procedure Prototype Salt fries manually User places cartons into scooper Manual labor required to start and turn scooper User removes locking rod to start operation and inserts locking rod to stop scooper motion User removes carton Final Design Salt fries manually User places cartons into scooper User pushes two buttons outside machine base to start operation Stepper Motor turns scooper and automatically stops and locks after 7 seconds User removes cartons
15
Issues tackled while prototyping Scooper Warping Carton Holder Variations Funnel in carton Funnel around carton Carton Modifications
16
French Fry Boxes Modified The tops of the current French fry boxes from McDonalds were removed Small – 4 1/8” x 5 1/8” Medium –4 3/4” x 5 1/4” Large – 5 5/8” x 5 3/4”
17
Future Improvements Modify scooper/boxes to dispense/contain other types of foods Dampen the noise that occurs when the scooper hits the ramp Automate loading and removal of cartons Automate salting process Incorporate a stacking subsystem for storage Improve the dismantling process to aid with cleaning
