Two Trends and Four Features from a Warehouse Perspective Melvin Fletcher
2
Two Trends and Four Features Trend 1 – GS1 Barcode in the supply chain Why does it effect my warehouse ? Trend 2 – RFID in the warehouse This will replace the barcode !
3
Two Trends and Four Features Within the warehouse – Datalinx dynamic stock take – Scan pack dispatching Outside the warehouse – Mobile order taking via a tablet PC – Proof of deliver and auto dispatch confirm
4
Why does it affect my warehouse ? We are seeing this encoding standard arrive on product You are being asked to print this on your products GS1 Barcode in the Supply Chain
5
What is GS1 ? GS1 is both an Organisation and a Standard ! GS1 are an independent, not-for-profit organisation working to make UK organisations more efficient by getting everybody speaking the same language when it comes to locating, transporting and trading goods. After all, life’s simpler when we all have the same information. GS1-UK set standards, using unique numbers, for global use which makes the reliable identification of products and assets possible. They are one of 108 GS1 member organisations across 150 countries, and operate in multiple sectors and industries. Source: www.gs1-uk.com
6
What is GS1 ? In the Warehouse, we are interested in the Standard !
7
Pre – GS1 Label Scan the Product code Scan the Batch Number Scan the Production Date Scan the Expiry Date Scan the Quantity 5 Scans The possibility of scanning fields incorrectly Date formats are the same but very different!
8
Post GS1 A Single Scan The Application de-concatinates the data into: Product Code Batch Number Production Date Expiry Date Quantity Single scan no possibility of wrong field scans, but it is a long barcode!
9
Post GS1 Same data within a 2D Datamatrix code The same is true for: Booking In Transfers Stock Taking Picking
10
What makes GS1 unique Like retail barcodes, it is an agreed standard – Information can be extrapolated Adopted as a standard by: – Retail supply chain – Healthcare supply chain It is a global standard – Works where product are received and shipped to locations
11
Why does it effect your warehouse ? Product is received quickly - 5 scans vs 1 scan More accurate data capture Re-labelling not required Produce GS1 standard labels to meet customers requirements GS1 standard is becoming more widely used More information: www.datalinx.co.uk/gs1

Questions on GS1 ?
13
RFID in the Warehouse
14
RFID How it works 2 types of tag: Passive or Active (with or without battery !!) Passive Tag 1) Energise the tag 2) Tag transmit via radio waves data 3) Reader reads data 4) Range dictated by the ability to induce power into tag
15
Passive tags are small
16
BatteryBattery RFID How it works Active Tag 1)Battery embedded in the tag powers the transmitter 2) Tag transmit data via radio waves 3)Reader reads data 4)Range is greater due to powered device
17
Active tags are larger (normally) Infant protection Bracelet Access or clocking pass Pallet with in built Tag Car tag for tolls
18
Will RFID Replace the Barcode ? They will work alongside each other: - The barcode is free to put on a product - Reading limitations of RF tags are similar to barcodes - Passive RF tag’s record “limited” characters, like a barcode - Barcodes and RF tags address different challenges
19
Will RFID Replace the Barcode ? In certain applications the RFID tag is better - Pet tagging In certain applications the barcode is better - Courier consignment tracking – customers print own labels In some applications either can operate - e.g. Airport luggage sortation systems
20
RFID In Real Life In the Warehouse, Car manufactures using RFID tagged “Shipping Pallets” to book in details of all component parts (i.e. engines) as a truck drives onto site In Motorsport Scrutineering of tyre usage In Retail Stock taking of clothing outlets

Questions On RFID
22
Four Features Warehouse Perspective
23
Features – Warehouse Perspective Within the warehouse – Datalinx dynamic stock take – Pack bench dispatching Outside the warehouse – Mobile order taking via a Tablet PC – Proof of deliver and auto dispatch confirm
24
Datalinx Dynamic Stock Take Stock take without stopping the warehouse Datalinx dynamic stock take is “transaction aware” – Sales orders can be picked whilst we count – Delivers true perpetual stock takes – Allows for stock take polices to be developed – Of course, feeds into Sage 500/1000 – Sage User Network members already use this functionality
25
Scan Pack Dispatching A sales order has been picked and passed in a tote bin for checking, packing and dispatching
26
Scan Pack Dispatching Order selected on touch screen by scanning tote bin number
27
Scan Pack Dispatching As product is scanned from tote bin, order lines are updated
28
Scan Pack Dispatch All lines checked and complete Select Complete - Dispatch confirm carried out - Paper work printed - Courier links - Product shipped
29
Mobile Order taking and PoD
