Brainstorming Fold a sheet of paper in half Write as many animals you can think of in 2 minutes on the LEFT side Now share your list with someone next to you.
3
All animals share several characteristics: – Their bodies are multi-cellular. – They are heterotrophs (cannot make their own food) and must get their energy by eating plants or other animals. – Their major functions are to obtain food and oxygen for energy keep their internal conditions in balance move reproduce
4
What are ways your animal list can be grouped/divided? Into only 2 groups?
5
Scientists divide animals into 2 phyla (groups): – Vertebrates – phylum called chordata – Invertebrates have a backbone/ spinal chord don’t have a backbone
6
Now, classify the animals in your list as vertebrates or invertebrates.
7
Invertebrates: do not have backbones or internal skeletons some have external skeletons, called exoskeletons.
8
Vertebrates: have backbones, an internal skeleton (endoskeleton), and muscles. have blood that circulates through blood vessels and lungs (or gills) for breathing. have a protective skin covering. have legs, wings, or fins for movement. have a nervous system with a brain that processes information from their environment through sensory organs.
