The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles Summary and response: This book is based on a true story about a six year old African American girl named Ruby Bridges. This is set in the 1960s in New Orleans, where Ruby battles against overt racism. This book carries an amazing message that believing in yourself can get you anywhere. The story of Ruby Bridges allows young children to understand racial tensions for another child point of view. The illustrations really made me feel like I was there with all those people, in that time period. The illustrations in the story make the saying that words can paint pictures in your mind, true.

Beautiful Blackbird by Ashley Bryan Summary and response: A long time ago, blackbird was voted the most beautiful bird in the forest. The red, green, yellow, and blue birds in the forest were very envious of blackbird. The colored birds begged blackbird to paint them black, so they could be beautiful too. Beautiful Blackbird teaches individuals about inner beauty. It focuses on sending a message about each person being unique in there own way.

A Sweet Smell of Roses by Angela Johnson Summary and response: This story is about two young girls who participate in a freedom march and listen to Dr. Martin Luther King speak during the Civil Rights Movement. While reading the story, the illustrations really caught my attention, because they are highly detailed, penciled drawings. Each drawing is done in black and white, and they had a define meaning. In addition, it was able to capture what these young girls fought/marched for during the Civil Rights Movement.

Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein Summary and response: Interrupting chicken is about the little red chicken who always interrupts his Papa during his bedtime story time. This story reminded me of some of the children that I had in my internship. Specifically, a little girl who would also interrupt you whenever you said or read anything. This book is a great way to teach students about manners, well as being entertaining.

Skeleton Hiccups by Margery Cuyler Summary and Response: Skeleton hiccups is a silly book that focuses on a skeleton who wakes up with the hiccups. After various unsuccessful attempts for getting rid of the hiccups, Skeleton and a ghost manage to scare them away. I made a connection with Skeleton hiccups because it deals with trying to get rid of the terrible hiccups, anybody can honestly relate to this. This story talks about the ridiculous things people do such as drinking water upside down. But even after doing these silly tricks to get rid of the hiccups, they still won’t stop. This book is a great way for students to make a self to text connection, while also being entertaining to them.
