4 Providers Five Major Providers: Verizon AT&T Sprint T Mobile Wal-Mart – Pay as You go Cell phone plans can be as expensive or inexpensive as you make them You can sign a contract (most contracts are 2 or 2 ½ years) or you can buy a “pay as you go” phone (also called prepaid wireless) Some features cost more to add onto your plan, for example, text and picture messaging (data plans), internet usage, email capabilities, etc.

5 A. Phones Each carrier has specific models of phones that work with their plan Have different price/service plans Many choices of services: Text messaging Voice recognition/voice dialing Camera/video camera Downloadable applications Email/Internet capabilities Ringtones/music Games Much more!

6 Types of Phones Phones Flip Phones A. Screen is under the top B. Push top from bottom to expose keyboard Scrolling phones – use finger to move screens eReaders Screens are larger than phone screens Tablets Has the largest of screens A. B. Scrolling Phone

7 Calling Cell Phones dial like a push-button landline phone Find number from saved, alphabetical, list - Or can set number on speed dial, then push speed dial button Must press ‘start’ key to have the phone begin the dialing sequence. Must push ‘end’ to stop the call.

8 Texting A Different way to send a message Converts number pad to alphabet Must have Texting package on your phone plan 2 styles of key pads 2-9 divides up alphabet Push 2 once for “a” Push 2 twice for “b” Push 2 three time for “c” Each key is a letter, like a keyboard Must have phone number to whom you are going to text to

9 How to Text 1. Move courser through contact names in phone. Select the person you want to text. 2. Select options: new Text message. Push select button 3. New blank screen should come up. 4. Use key pad to select letters: Push 2 once for “a” Push 2 twice for “b” Push 2 three times for “c” Or if you have alpha keyboard (Typewriter) select letters Create your message 5. Select Send to send message

10 Internet Surfing Getting on the internet on your phone Phone acts like a computer, but the screen is smaller Must have a data plan on your phone bill May be expensive

11 B. eReaders Ability to load books onto the eReader from Libraries and Internet sites Can also load Applications, Games, Movies, & Internet Two Main Players: Nook ( Barnes & Noble) Kindle (Amazon) (black & white) Kindle Fire (Color) Paperwhite HD (new) Nook Kindle

15 What is it? Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet. Can I become a “Facebook” member? Yes! Anyone can join as long as you have a valid e-mail address. If you want to see the profiles of your classmates or co-workers on Facebook, be sure to use your school or work email to register. Once you are an official member you can: Search for other people, but you can only see profiles for those who are currently in your network unless you request them or they request you as a friend Create your own profile Upload photos and videos Send messages View your homepage http://www.facebook.comhttp://www.facebook.com Set privacy settings

16 MySpace What is it? http://www.myspace.comhttp://www.myspace.com Myspace is a networking website where people of all ages can create their own page. They can customize the page’s background, pictures, videos, comments, and information to fit their personality and life style. Can I have my own MySpace page? Yes! Anyone can have a page. The only thing you need to get started is an email address. From there you set up your profile and can receive help getting started. You can set your security settings in different ways too. This helps keep your information private and safe from hackers. What are the different security settings? You can choose for your page to be either public or private. If it is public, anyone can look at it and they do not have to be a member to do so. The private setting is where only people who are your friends can look at your page. The other thing you can set to private is your pictures. This is where you pick who can look at your pictures.

17 Instant Messaging What is it? Instant Messaging (IM’ing) and Text Messaging (via cellular devices) allows you to type short messages that appear on someone else’s computer screen or cell phone. This means of communication is faster than e-mail, but less intrusive than a phone call. Major programs: ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger Facebook Chat Twitter Web conferencing services – connects clients with video, presentations and voice

18 Skype What is Skype? http://www.skype.comhttp://www.skype.com Downloadable software that enables conversations, video sharing and instant messaging between people from all around the world Part of the Microsoft family Must have a camera attached to computer How is Skype used? Used by millions of individuals and businesses Can make video and voice calls, send instant messages, and share files Every day people are using Skype to make low-cost phone calls to both mobile and land lines.

19 Twitter What is Twitter? http://www.twitter.comhttp://www.twitter.com Twitter is a messaging service that works over a variety of networks and on a number of devices. Each Tweet holds 140 characters. How is Twitter used? There is one question that is asked: “What are you doing?” and you can choose to respond to it. Your friends and family can reply to your post and can keep in contact with you through this way of social interaction. Updates from your friends and family also come to you through a variety of devices: web, phone, etc.

20 YouTube What is YouTube? http://www.youtube.comhttp://www.youtube.com YouTube is the home for video online: Watch millions of videos Share favorites with friends and family Upload your videos to a worldwide audience YouTube allows people to easily upload and share video clips. Everyone can watch videos on YouTube. People can see first-hand accounts of current events, find videos about their hobbies and interests, and discover the quirky and unusual. People can use YouTube videos for educational and instructional purposes.

21 Blogging What is a blog? An online diary or a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a web page A means by which people communicate and share information What is the purpose of a blog?  Record personal thoughts and experiences  You can share information  Networking and communication between groups or individuals  In simple terms, a blog is a web site, where you write stuff on an ongoing basis. New stuff shows up at the top, so your visitors can read what's new. Then they comment on it or link to it or email you. Or not. http://www.blogger.com
