3 What is EARSC? EARSC @ Geo Work Programme Ssession – 2-4th Geneva, May 2016 EARSC is a trade association (non-profit Belgian company), founded in 1989, which represents European companies: providing services (including consultancy) or supplying equipment and infrastructure in the field of remote sensing. Our mission is: to foster the development of the European Geo-Information Service Industry to represent European geospatial-information providers, creating a sustainable network between industry, decision makers and users Our focus is on the use of remote sensing from space-based platforms (satellites) and we have members from the full value-chain including aircraft and RPAS operators. 3

5 What EARSC do? EARSC @ Geo Work Programme Ssession – 2-4th Geneva, May 2016 1.Provide information to our members on programmes, policy and the sector; (business intelligence) 2.Maintain a knowledge of the industry, i.e. statistics, market information, etc. 3.Promote professional standards within the industry (certification) 4.Promote the industry and its capabilities by: Creating links between EO services sector and other business sectors, e.g. oil & gas, insurance, public institutions e.g. the World Bank Organising events offering networking opportunities as well as focused information Advocacy towards policy makers on issues of concern Awareness and media. e.g. eomag, OGEOZine, etc. EARSC focus is on enabling the development of new business 5

This represents a growth of 5% since 2012 The information services part of the business represents 51% of the market or €462m. This represents a growth of 72% since 2012 (31% per annum). 9 EARSC @ Geo Work Programme Ssession – 2-4th Geneva, May 2016 Types of Customer 50% of revenues are coming from public sector operational customers at different levels (plus 15% R&D). Around 4% comes from International organisations. Around 30% of revenues is coming from sales to other industrial customers. This shows an aggregate picture of 2012 & 2014 as a few large contracts are changing the year-to-year picture quite significantly. 9

10 EARSC @ Geo Work Programme Ssession – 2-4th Geneva, May 2016 Industry awareness of GEO & participation to GEO activities Around 2/3rds of respondents are very or somewhat familiar with GEO whilst 34% are only slightly aware or not at all. No company reported to have participated in projects but 28% did say that they had participated directly in meetings organised by GEO. 10

11 EARSC @ Geo Work Programme Ssession – 2-4th Geneva, May 2016 Views on industrial participation to GEO Here 82% consider that there is merit in engagement with 29% wishing to do so directly and 53% preferring that EARSC take a representative position towards GEO. 11

12 EARSC @ Geo Work Programme Ssession – 2-4th Geneva, May 2016 What can GEO do to help Industry? 1.Enable Data Access by promoting a free and open data policy BUT balancing the interests of the public and private sectors. 2.Increase awareness about GEOSS opportunities 3.Raise awareness amongst GEO stakeholders of the technical capabilities and help co-ordinate between research and commercial interests. 4.Understand public sector needs by maintaining a dialogue with the GEO stakeholders and interpreting these needs into future system or product capabilities (through R&D if necessary). 12

Products and services supporting the SBA’s 3. Help GEO by filling capability gaps through private investment 4. Provide operational services meeting long term commitments not met be scientific objectives 5. Bridge to other industrial sectors (energy, agriculture, transportation,..) 13

Bring private sector resources to support GEO objectives Promote the benefits/capabilities of EO services to GEO stakeholders Establish a GEO-Private Sector Forum to provide for exchange on a regular basis, and assist GEO in planning its activities with input from the private sector Regional industry meetings Regional industry representatives to meet with GEO during the plenary. EARSC could represent the European industry 14

17 EARSC @ Geo Work Programme Ssession – 2-4th Geneva, May 2016 17 The case of Finland Winter Navigation “Finland is an island!” : over 90% of Finnish imports and exports travel by sea. Decision in 1971 that all major Finnish ports (25) should be kept open through the winter In 2003, decision to use Satellite imagery to replace helicopters on board ice-breakers Whilst helicopters provide an instant view; conditions change under bad weather conditions when they may not be able to fly Satellite imagery provides a synoptic view of the whole of the Baltic which allows icebreaker captains to plot a route right through the ice fields

18 EARSC @ Geo Work Programme Ssession – 2-4th Geneva, May 2016 18 From Satellites to Supermarkets The Study shows that the Finnish & Swedish economies benefit from the use of satellite imagery coming from Copernicus; Between €24m and €116m of economic benefit is made each year. The Economic Benefits €2.1-€3.3m pa €2.3m pa Icebreakers use imagery to find the best routes through the ice Ships save fuel and time Factories are able to operate all year round Citizens can be sure that the supermarkets (and petrol stations and pharmacies) are stocked. €6.3-€63m pa €5.8-€9.4m pa Ports are able to operate more efficiently €3.5-€17.5m pa
