5 Overview Middle Grade Career-Technical Education Expansion Industry-Recognized Credential Only Courses for Seniors

6 Middle Grade Career-Technical Education Expansion Legislation now provides opportunities to expand Career-Technical Education in grades 7 and 8. Districts must provide career-tech programming in both grades 7 and 8, or request a waiver from the Ohio Department of Education.

7 Middle Grade Career-Technical Education Expansion To request a waiver, a district must submit a letter stating their intention to not provide career-technical education in grades 7 or 8. This letter must be submitted no later than Sept. 30 for each year the district does not intend to offer career-tech programming.

8 Process for Middle School Career- Technical Education Programming

9 1 Contact your Career- Technical Planning District lead 2 Discuss program ownership

10 3 Discuss possible program options. Review CTE-26 processes and program approval criteria.

11 4 Discuss grade-level options Consider beginning courses in grade 7 and continuing the pathway courses into high school

12 5 Make determination to provide or not provide middle school career- technical education programming.

13 5a Adopt local board resolution and provide to the Ohio Department of Education by Sept. 30 of that school year. Must be revisited annually Those choosing to NOT provide:

14 5b Develop a Career Pathway and Program of Study that reflects the pathway you plan to deliver. Those choosing TO provide:

15 6 Develop and submit CTE-26 to assigned Career-Technical Planning District lead

16 7 Career-Technical Planning District lead district must review CTE-26 application Approval, disapproval or determine to take no action

17 8 Career-Technical Planning District lead district shall notify the applicant of its decision by March 1.

18 Middle Grade Career-Tech Course Requirements VM Courses  Designed for grades 7-8  Does not qualify toward a program’s four- course minimum  Courses range from 30-60 hours in length  Concentrator status not required  End-of-course-test not required  First course of a career field and first course of a career pathway

27 Middle Grade Courses VM Courses CTE-26 Application and Program of Study required  Continuous career-tech programming from grade to grade not required  Must align to a program within the district’s Career-Technical Planning District

28 Middle Grade Courses VM Courses Must have access to Career-Technical Student Organization Students gain technical knowledge and skills through practical experiences

29 Middle Grade Courses VT Courses  Designed for grades 7-12  Typically 120-280 hours, with a few exceptions  Must be aligned to a career-field pathway  The career-field pathway must have a minimum of four courses that total 450 hours or more  Requires end-of-course-test  Applies toward concentrator status

30 Middle Grade Courses VT Courses  CTE-26 Application and Program of Study required  Continuous career-tech programming from grade-to-grade is required  Must have access to Career-Technical Student Organization  Students apply technical knowledge an skills through real world experiences

31 Middle Grade Career-Tech Licensure Options VM Courses  Any CTE 5-year professional license  Any 5-year professional teaching license with completion of career-technical education validation  CTE validation will be designed and developed (January-April 2015)  Teachers will be required to obtain the validation before school year 2015-2016 VT Courses  Career-tech license (Resident Educator, Alternative Resident Educator or Supplemental License)

36 Industry-Recognized Credential Only Courses for Seniors Many seniors have limited course work Allows districts to implement industry-recognized credential programs Meets the needs of districts and students and provides business and industry partners with a skilled workforce

37 Industry-Recognized Credential Only Courses for Seniors Legislation updated graduation requirements to ensure all students are ready for success in college and work.

38 Industry-Recognized Credential Only Courses for Seniors Beginning with the class of 2018, one graduation option will be for a student to earn an approved industry-recognized credential or state-issued license and achieve an established score on a job skills assessment.

39 Industry-Recognized Career-Tech Credential Courses Designed for grade 12 Once the industry credential list is determined, credentials will be assigned a course code

40 Industry-Recognized Career-Tech Credential Courses Credentials must be on the approved list of industry-recognized credentials for Ohio in- demand occupations Must meet industry hour requirements to issue credential Recommend (soft skills) be included in the course of study

42 Industry-Recognized Career-Tech Licensure Options  Career-technical education license  Professional teaching license  Industry and business trainers, post- secondary providers or Ohio Technical Center instructors  Must acquire a 12-hour teaching permit

43 Industry-Recognized Career-Tech Licensure Options All instructors must maintain current industry credential(s) and be approved to provide accredited instruction for the specific industry credential(s).

44 Career-Technical Funding Industry-recognized career-tech credential courses are funded according to Ohio legislation Other funding options are being researched and evaluated
