OBJECTIVES: ● Explain the importance of editorials in contributing to community conversation; ● Write editorials that explain, evaluate or persuade; ● Understand the role of editorial cartoons ● Evaluating Editorial Examples and Worsheet ● Take notes and show them at end of class.

An editorial is an article that states the newspaper’s opinions or ideas on an issue.

Types of editorials Editorials that explain inform readers and offer YOUR interpretation of the facts. Editorials that evaluate look at programs and discuss whether they are working well or need to be changed. They give specific reasons for the evaluation. Editorials that persuade offer specific solutions to a specific problem. They expect immediate action rather than the understanding of a situation.

Opinions belong: -- In the opinion/editorial section. -- In signed columns; it is the writer’s opinion. -- In reviews (clearly marked, too) of books, movies, plays, etc. You should NOT SEE OPINIONS in: -- News stories. They must be fair and accurate and give both sides. Writers do NOT express their opinion or bias. -- Feature stories. They also do not include writer’s opinions.

Editorials appear on the newspaper’s editorial/opinion section. This can include signed columns, unsigned editorials, letters to the editor, and cartoons.

Where do editorial ideas come from? Students’ interactions with life, with school, with teachers, with administrators, with society. Editorials stir debate and say what’s right or wrong in the community.
