State Government When we hear the word government, we often think of the federal government, yet our state government often has a more direct impact on our lives. The federal government and the state governments share powers. However, all state laws that are made must comply with the constitution. If a conflict arises, the Constitution always wins. ConstitutionState Law I always win!

State Government Each state has a constitution that looks very similar to the national one. State constitutions, though, tend to be longer and more detailed. State governments provide a wide range of services. They maintain law and order, enforce criminal law, protect property, and regulate business. They also supervise public education, build and maintain highways, and license certain professions like doctors, lawyers, and teachers. States also give driver’s licenses. I wish I was as good a teacher as Mr. Ford! Also he is so handsome! In a few years you could be driving like me!

Local Government Local government gets its power from the state. One of local government’s main responsibilities is the public schools. Local school officials are in charge of hiring teachers and making a budget. I don’t know…CAN YOU?

Local Government Local government is more than just schools though. Our police, firefighters, and garbage men are all part of local government. Local government supplies us with a sewer system and clean water. It gives us libraries, parks, and zoos.
