Inuit Kwakiutl Lakota—Sioux Pueblo Iroquois

2 Inuit Inuit Indians inhabited present-day Alaska and northern Canada.
They lived in Arctic areas where the temperature is below freezing much of the year

3 Inuit Tribe Homes—no permanent homes—they were nomads
The lived in the Canadian Arctic: top of North America, Canada, Greenland, and Alaska

Summer homes—tents made from seal skin or caribou

Mukluks were made of caribou, reindeer, or seal skin Parkas were made from fur and hide from animals They also wore trousers, leggings, boots, mittens, and socks

The Inuit ate meat and blubber, walrus, seal, white whale, fish, and drinking water was melted ice and snow Knives made from bones, antlers, harpoons, spears, bird darts, traps, and snares were used for hunting

10 Inuit Travel Inuit traveled by foot, kayak, hunting boats, umiak (a large open boat that could carry many people for whale hunting)

11 Kwakiutl Tribe The Kwakiutl lived in British Columbia, Canada, Northwest Territory of North America They relocated to be by migrating fish and game

13 Kwakiutl Homes The Kwakiutl lived in multifamily houses made of wood, large wooden frames with thin cedar-bark as covering Roofs were slanted for easy drainage

Males and females both wore cedar-bark and fur robes Women wore aprons made of bark bound together with goat-hair They wore wooden capes and hoods from cedar-bark—they were waterproof so they could work in the rain

Kwakiutl ate deer, moose, fish, shellfish, seaweed, and berries They used spears and nets for hunting

18 Pueblo Tribe The Pueblo Tribe lived in the Southwestern part of the United States—New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and into parts of Texas

20 Homes of the Pueblo Indians
Pueblos Indians had apartment-like multistoried stone or adobe (clay) cliff-dwelling Many families lived in villages and they used wooden ladders to enter their homes Homes were built on mesas, cliffs, and mountains They also slept in caves

Clothes were made from cotton because of the heat Men wore kilts of cotton and ankle high moccasins—for warmth they used wool or cotton blankets Women wore cotton or wool dresses Rabbit fur and turkey feather robes were also worn

The Pueblo were mostly vegetarians, but would eat meat when available—rabbit, gopher, squirrel They hunted for deer, antelope and mountain lion They raised corn which was 80% of their diet They also grew peppers, onions, chilies, tobacco, squash, melons, and beans

The Pueblo used boomerang-shaped sticks which were thrown at animals, Handmade tools and weapons The Pueblo traveled by foot

29 Homes of the Lakota-Sioux Tribes
Tipi (teepee) made of tall wooden poles covered with tough buffalo hides—was one room They moved from place to place and took tipis with them—they followed the buffalo

Clothes were made from animal skins—deerskins Women and girls wore long dresses and leggings—they might be decorated with elk teeth, bear claws, feathers, or fur Men wore deerskin shirts and leggings While hunting, they wore breechcloths and moccasins In winter, buffalo robes with fur side on the inside Clothing was made from skins of elk, deer, or antelope

BUFFALO! Also ate bear, antelope, wild turkeys, berries, fruits and vegetables (sometimes) They did not plant gardens because they were always on the move and could not take care of them—ate wild berries and vegetables (spinach, potatoes, turnips) Used bows and arrows (aimed at the buffalo’s heart)

34 Traveling of the Lakota-Sioux Tribe
The Lakota-Sioux took everything with them on a travois (trav-wah)—which is two long poles with short poles across it to hold the items Horses pulled the travois Chiefs and hunters rode in the front, then women and girls, Babies rose in cradles

36 Iroquois Tribe The Iroquois lived in what is now called New York State along the St. Lawrence River They lived in the Northeastern part of the United States Six tribes became the Iroquois Confederacy Chief Hiawatha made a famous speech about unity

38 Homes of the Iroquois Longhouses which was a long house made of upright logs and cross poles covered with elm bark It had no windows and were between 50 and 150 feet long Many families lived in one longhouse, new families just added on at the end

All clothing was handmade from deerskin Women wore skirts, vests, and moccasins decorated with porcupine quills, shell beads, dyed hair Men wore deerskin breechcloths in the summer, and leggings and tunics in the winter Moccasins made from leather an corn husks

The Iroquois ate corn, beans, squash (The Three Sisters), fruits, and nuts. They also ate mean such as deer, bear, beaver, rabbit, squirrel, wild turkey, pigeon The used bows and arrows, traps, snares, hatchets, and large nets for hunting

The Iroquois traveled by foot—they were excellent runners They also traveled by canoe
