Scope of Practice O Direct and indirect patient care services that ensure the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, and protection of patients; and the performance of disease prevention and restorative measures. O Direct and indirect patient care services, including, but not limited to, the administration of medications and therapeutic agents, necessary to implement a treatment, disease prevention, or rehabilitative regimen ordered by and within the scope of licensure of a physician, dentist, podiatrist, or clinical psychologist O The performance of skin tests, immunization techniques, and the withdrawal of human blood from veins and arteries. O Observation of signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to treatment, general behavior, or general physical condition O Determination of whether the signs, symptoms, reactions, behavior, or general appearance exhibit abnormal characteristics O Implementation, based on observed abnormalities, of appropriate reporting, or referral, or standardized procedures, or changes in treatment regimen in accordance with standardized procedures, or the initiation of emergency procedures.

Paraprofessionals and their roles O CNA: Vital signs, hygiene, patient transport, recording I&Os, assistance with ADLs O LVN: Basic nursing care, administer meds (non-IV), report patient status to RN O RN: Patient assessment, planning, medication administration, monitoring status, coordinating care with other medical professional, assist with diagnostic tests, patient education O ADN (associate degree) O BSN (bachelor’s degree) O MSN (master’s degree) O NP: Diagnosis and management of common illnesses, physical exam, order and interpret diagnostic tests, provide counseling and education, write some prescriptions O Can be master’s or doctorate level

ANA Code of Ethics O The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems. O The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community. O The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient. O The nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimum patient care. O The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to preserve integrity and safety, to maintain competence, and to continue personal and professional growth.

O The nurse participates in establishing, maintaining, and improving healthcare environments and conditions of employment conducive to the provision of quality health care and consistent with the values of the profession through individual and collective action. O The nurse participates in the advancement of the profession through contributions to practice, education, administration, and knowledge development. O The nurse collaborates with other health professionals and the public in promoting community, national, and international efforts to meet health needs. O The profession of nursing, as represented by associations and their members, is responsible for articulating nursing values, for maintaining the integrity of the profession and its practice, and for shaping social policy.

Paraprofessionals and their roles O SLPA (Speech Language Pathology Assistant) O Registration O Hold a bachelor’s degree in CDS or an AA /AS in Speech-Language Pathology Assistant from an SLPA program O 70 hours of fieldwork experience O Role: Execute treatment plan of ST O Speech Language Aides O Narrower training base and more limited responsibilities than SLPAs.
