What is an Athletic Trainer?

Athletic Trainers (ATs) health care professionals. The services provided by ATs comprise prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. ATs work under the direction of physicians, as prescribed by state licensure statutes.

How to become an Athletic Trainer Currently, two ways: 1.Bachelor’s Degree 2.Entry-Level Masters Must be accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) Changes are happening! Soon to become a Master’s Degree

How to become an Athletic Trainer After obtaining or being eligible to obtain a degree: Sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) Exam BOC also tracks continuing education units (CEUs) ATs must complete every 2 years

The Sports Medicine Team Team Physicians General Medicine- Treats injuries and illnesses and has ability to prescribe needed medication and dictate a treatment plan Orthopedics- Treats injuries to the musculoskeletal system. Operates on serious injuries. Podiatrist- Treats injuries specifically to the foot and ankle

The Sports Medicine Team Strength and Conditioning Coach Designs weight lifting and conditioning programs specific to the athlete’s and sports needs

The Sports Medicine Team Sports Psychologist Helps athletes maintain a healthy mental state Helps with private issues but also those that pertain to athletics such as: Anxiety Goal Setting Imagery

The Sports Medicine Team Nutritionist Helps guide athletes to eat a diet that fuels them for their sport. Helps athletes prepare when they have dietary restrictions such as diabetes or allergies.

The Sports Medicine Team Other healthcare professions include: Cardiologist Dentist Physical Therapist Physician Assistant Neurologist Chiropractor School Nurse Emergency Medical Technician Massage Therapist Athletic Training Students And of course the ATHLETE!

Athletic Training Facilities Hydrotherapy Room Includes warm whirlpool, cold whirlpool, and can also have an underwater treadmill used for treatment and rehabilitation
