Mammals and Their Habitats Today we will be learning about different mammals and their habitats Most pictures by: Lyndsey Bell

Curriculum Expectations  1.1 analyse the positive and negative impacts of human interactions with natural habitats and communities (e.g., human dependence on natural materials), taking different perspectives into account (e.g., the perspectives of a housing developer, a family in need of housing, an ecologist), and evaluate ways of minimizing the negative impacts  1.2 identify reasons for the depletion or extinction of a plant or animal species (e.g., hunting, disease, invasive species, changes in or destruction of its habitat), evaluate the impacts on the rest of the natural community, and propose possible actions for preventing such depletions or extinctions from happening  2.3 use scientific inquiry/research skills (see page 15) to investigate ways in which plants and animals in a community depend on features of their habitat to meet important needs (e.g., beavers use water for shelter [they build their lodges so the entrance is under water], food [cattails, water lilies, and other aquatic plants], and protection [they slap their tails on the water to warn of danger  3.4 demonstrate an understanding of a community as a group of interacting species sharing a common habitat (e.g., the life in a meadow or in a patch of forest) Grade 4

Mammals Definition:  A mammal is an animal that breathes air, has a backbone, and grows hair at some point during its life.  In addition, all female mammals have glands that can produce milk.  Mammals are among the most intelligent of all living creatures.

Can anyone think of any mammals?

Mammals live in… all sorts of environments including the ocean, underground, and on land.

How we can see into the wild…  With a new technology called 360 degree cameras we can go into an animals habitat and see everything  360 cameras are cameras that are placed in the wild and allow us to see 360 degrees around  As you move the IPad around left to right, up and down the camera moves and shows you new things

Lets take a look… We are going to pass around the IPads and everyone can look at the animals habitats Today we will see elephants and lions

Mammals and Humans Mammals Need  Food  Water  Shelter Humans Need  Food  Water  Shelter

Human Affects on Habitats  Humans destroy a lot of mammals habitats by:  cutting down trees  polluting water sources  killing off food sources  This can be stopped if we use natural gases, recycled, and stop polluting the oceans.
