Punxsutawney vs. the Mystery City
2
Do you like Punxs’y? Compare it to other places. 1. What is good about living in a larger city? Smaller town? Rural area? What access to jobs and/or entertainment do you want? 2. What climate do you want? 3. Crime rate? 4. Kind of geography– near ocean, mountains, hills, no hills? 5. How close to your family or relatives do you want to be? 6. How about the average cost of a home? It is the largest single purchase that most Americans will ever make, and is the biggest part of most of our individual wealth.

You’ll need to look up: 1.Population- note that this site only show population for one zip code. Cities have many more people than the site shows, as they have many zip codes within that city! Round this to the closest 100. 2.Median household income- Round this to the closest 100. Median means “middle.” Half of the numbers are below and half are above. Numbers in the list that are far below or above will not throw off the median. For instance, here are some income amounts: 1. 50,000 2.65,000 3.68,000 4.72,000 5.1,550,000 The median is the middle point, or $68,000

Average Household Income- (Round to closest 100) The average income is figured by adding all the incomes together and dividing by the total number of incomes. For instance, what is the average income of these same ones: 1. 50,000 2.65,000 3.68,000 4.72,000 5.1,550,000 The average is $361,000. White Collar and Blue Collar Jobs- (Round to closest whole number) These refer to the types of jobs. “White Collar Jobs” usually refer to people in management and administration, as well as those working at desks. “Blue collar jobs” are hands-on jobs where they are working with equipment, outdoors, machines, etc. and are not done at a desk. One is not better than another.

Average House Sale Price It is the largest single purchase that most Americans will ever make, and is the biggest part of most of our individual wealth. How much can you afford? How much are you willing to spend? Should you find this out before or after you move into a new area? Open up the worksheet on “Cost of Living Comparison WS.” Only ONE of you at a table may select a particular city. There are nine listed. Be sure to round the numbers as directed!
