BYOD: You want me to let them use Cellphones?!?! Kim Dodson 8/10/13
2
Why BYOD and what does it mean to me? Use what they already have. Kids today do not remember a time without cell phones, laptops, or tablets. We need to help prepare them for the future. There are jobs today that did not exist in 2000. Available jobs change almost daily.
3
Generational Digital Divide = parents and teachers being largely digital immigrants, and kids being digital natives.
4
This is what WE are afraid of!

Here is the future!

So, how do I integrate technology into my lessons? Project-based activities allow students to research and then create something with the knowledge they learn. Interactive Whiteboards, clickers, and websites like Padlet allow students to give immediate feedback and ask questions. Student-created media using podcasts, videos, or slideshows allow students to be the teacher. The idea is to allow them to drive their own learning.
9
Levels of Technology Integration Sparse – Technology is rarely used or available. Basic – Technology is used or available occasionally/often in a lab rather than the classroom. Comfortable – Technology is used in the classroom on a fairly regular basis. Seamless – Students employ technology daily in the classroom using a variety of tools to complete assignments and create projects that show a deep understanding of content.
10
SAMR Model Substitution – Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change. Augmentation – Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement. Modification – Technology allows for significant task redesign. Redefinition – Technology allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable.
11
SAMR Model and Google Docs
13
Why are you using the technology? Just because it’s there? Allows students to do Old things in Old ways? Allows students to do Old things in New ways? Creating new and different learning experiences for the students? We must evaluate our use of technology honestly!
14
There’s an app for that! Hundreds if not thousands of apps are available for mobile devices. There are great web resources if you will take time to look. My favorites: Remind101, Socrative, Thatquiz, and Make Beliefs Comic
15
A catchy tune to help remember
16
What will they bring? Students will bring any and all of the following: laptops, iPads, tablets, and cell phones. Those without these devices will still have the option of a district issued laptop. We need to find a way to incorporate all of them into our lessons. There are many ways to accomplish this and it only takes a little creativity on our part.
17
What do we need to know? School Fusion Moodle Edmodo Google Docs Students will have Google accounts including Gmail Printers are only available in an emergency. Consequences may apply for frequent fliers. You may use other websites, but they must be linked on your School Fusion page. Pick one and stick with it all year! Parents do not want multiple websites to access.
18
The role of digital citizenship Not only do we need to allow them to use technology to drive their learning, but we also need to teach them how to be good digital citizens. We need to teach them about cyberbullying, plagiarism, copyright, digital footprint, and proper conduct online.
19
Where do we go from here? Where are we now? Where do we want to go? How will we get there? How will we know we are there? How can we keep it going? Taken from Asking the Right Questions, Edie L. Holcomb
