3  Residential Construction refers to building of structures in which people live.  Stick construction: wood assembled into framework, then covered with building materials to make the walls, floors, and roof  Industrial Construction includes the building of manufacturing plants and other industrial structures. Types of Construction Projects

4  Commercial Construction involves building structures that are used for business  A building footprint is the area of ground covered by a building  Public Works Construction involves building structures intended for public use or benefit

5  Buildings  A temporary or permanent structure with a roof and walls  Roads  Highways, streets, other types of roads  Tunnels  Underground passageway that allows people, vehicles, or materials to pass through or under an obstruction  Earth – constructed in soil or sand  Immersed – pre-manufactured sections sunk into trenches at the bottom of a waterway then connected  Rock – blasted or drilled through rock Types of Structures

6  Dams  A structure placed across a body of water to control or block its flow  The water that collects behind a dam is called a reservoir (a lake in which water is stored for use)  Canals  Artificial waterways built for irrigation or navigation  Irrigation canals – carry water from a place where it is plentiful to another place where water is needed.  Navigation canals connect two bodies of water or allow ships to bypass shallow or narrow parts of a river

7  Bridges  Structures built to allow people and vehicles to pass over something else  Water, valleys, highways, railroad tracks  Types of bridges:  Beam  Arch  Truss  Cantilever  Suspension  Cable-stayed  Movable
