2 1 How to choose a career When considering a career, you need to think about: labour market information prospects job satisfaction salary skills and qualities qualifications working conditions. Do you know what these terms mean?

3 Lesson 9: How to choose a career2 Labour market information Consider: how much competition there is for jobs in this area. For example, job roles in the media are very popular, and there may be hundreds of applicants for just one job. whether the sector is growing or shrinking. For example, sectors such as manufacturing are shrinking while opportunities for ‘green’ jobs are growing.

4 Lesson 9: How to choose a career3 Prospects Think about how the job is structured. Does it have a clear promotion path? What benefits does it include? (For example, a pension or a company car.)

5 Lesson 9: How to choose a career4 Job satisfaction Think about what you like to do. Do you prefer to spend time indoors or outdoors? Do you like to work with other people, or do you prefer to spend time on your own? If you choose a job that does not match your own interests, you are unlikely to enjoy it!

6 Lesson 9: How to choose a career5 Salary Consider how much you are likely to earn. Will the job provide a regular income? Will you earn enough to live on? Might you need to look for other, part-time jobs?

Would you mind spending time away from friends and family? – Will you need to move house in order to take up a job? where you will be working – Will you be working in an office or outdoors? What would you prefer?
