2 The Nambawi ( 남바위 ) Winter Cap/Length 34/20 Century The Joseon Period's thermal hat that was used by both men and women was also known as "the Beetle because the posterior view resembled a beetle. The cap exposed the crown of the head and covered over the ear, neck, and the head. The outer surface was made with silk, the inner surface with either silk or cotton, and the edges were outlined with fur. For women, the front-center was ornamented with tassel and jewelry. For men, the cap was left unornamented and was worn beneath Sa-Mo or Gat (Korean traditional hat).

3 The Poong-Cha( 풍차 ) Winter Cap/ Length 35/20 Century The Joseon period's thermal hat for men and women was also referred to as Poong-Chae( 풍채 ), Hoieum( 호이엄 ). It covered the back of the neck and the cheeks. The outer surface was either black, purple, or navy blue, while the inner surface was made with silk or velvet and the edges were outlined with fur. Later on, the ear muffs were tailored together. When not used to cover the cheeks, the muffs were tied at the back.

4 Ayam( 아얌 ) Fur Cap/Length 134, Width 28/20 Century The Joseon Period's thermal hat for women was also referred to as Aeg-Eom( 액엄 ). The cap fully exposed the crown of the head, surrounding the forehead like a band, and a long fur tail hung down from the cap. The front and back-center was ornamented with tassels and the ribbon tail was decorated with ornaments of cicadas, in detailed drawings, or jade.

5 Jobawi( 조바위 ) Women's Winter Cap/Length 20, Width 28.5/20Century This is the Joseon period women's thermal hat. The cap exposed the crown of the head, circularly cut out so as not to cover women's chignon at the back of the head. The outer surface was in black or purple and the inner surface was in navy blue, purple or black silk, or cotton. The front and back portion of the center was ornamented with tassels. Neo-Wul( 너울 ) Women's Veil /Length 136, Diameter 146, Top-diameter 10/17 Century The Joseon Period women's headgear is also referred to as Gae-Du( 개두 ), Ra-Bul( 라불 ) or Neo-Bul( 너불 ). The veil was worn over the face on top of Gat or other caps. The veil was made with eight loops of black silk, waist-deep in length. The La or Sa (silk-like fabric) that covers over the face is translucent, allowing the women to look through the veil.

6 HoGun( 호건 ) Hood for Children/Length 50/Width 18.8/20 Century This is a head gear for young boys around 5 to 6 years of age. The top part is round and the rear tail hangs long on both sides with ear muffs attached with a string. There is embroidering in the shape of a tiger with details of eyes, eye brows, beard, and teeth on the hood where the forehead rests.

7 Gul-le( 굴레 ) Children's Head Dress/Length 48, Diameter 31.5/20 Century This is a thermal and ornamental head gear for one to five year-old children. The cap was created by criss-crossing three or more strands of silk and a floral knob crowns to the top of the head, with a tail that hangs from the back. For boys, the part that surrounds the face is in navy blue, and for girls in purple. In Spring, Summer, and Autumn, the head dress was made with silk and in Winter, the silk was stuffed with cotton. Korean characters such as, 수복강녕 (to live long in prosperity and in good health) and 부귀다남자 (men of wealth and status), are embroidered on the rear side of the head wear.
