Kingdoms- All living organisms can be classified in one of the 6 kingdoms. They are listed from the least evolved to the most evolved (complex) Bacteria- archaebacteria Bacteria- eubacteria Protist Fungus Plant Animal
3
Bacteria- unicellular prokaryotes Both kingdoms of bacteria have this definition. Sometimes bacteria are referred to as the kingdom “monera” Unicellular- single celled Prokaryote- NO nucleus So….Bacteria are the only prokaryotes. All other kingdoms will be eukaryotes (have a nucleus)
4
The Old System
5
6 Kingdom Proposal Archebacteria EUbacteria
6
Kingdom Protista Eukaryote, unicellular ***Protists used to be only unicellular organisms. Now there are some multicellular organisms, such as algae, classified as protists.
7
Fungi Eukaryote, MULTICELLULAR, cell wall, heterotroph Multicellular is the evolutionary advancement.
8
Plantae Eukaryote, Multicellular, cell wall, AUTOTROPH Plants are more evolved than fungus because they can make their own food.
9
Animalia Eukaryote, multicellular, NO CELL WALL, heterotroph Animals are more evolved than plants because we have no cell wall. This allows us to move (although some animals do not move…like the sponge) Yes, Humans are animals.
10
Parasite Lives off of another LIVING organism Mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, leeches, tapeworms Mistletoe in trees Some fungus…athletes foot
11
Saprophyte Lives off of DEAD or decaying organisms Ex: Most Fungus, a lot of bacteria
