The Reconstruction of Rome PBL # 4 Learn by Doing “The greatest sight in the world is to see a great man struggling against adversity”
2
The task at hand… As a class it will be your job to construct a replica that displays some of Ancient Rome’s greatest Architectural and Engineering achievements This is the epitome of collaboration and team work as your class will be pitted against the other STEM class to find out which can create the most accurately detailed model of Ancient Rome Each classes model will be judged by four to six other teachers or students who have previously completed this project!. There is a prize for winning…

An overview of Rome

The Buildings and Structures you will construct… BuildingsStructures 1. A Roman Forum, such as the Forum of Caesar 1. A working Aqueduct 2. The Coliseum2. A Roman Bath that actually holds water 3. The Circus Maximus 4. The Pantheon 5. The Theatre of Pompey

Preparation for the Project Each group of two will first be tasked with creating and documenting a detailed design cycle following the STEM design process. This will require each group to explain how each step of the design process will be utilized with in this process. You and your partner may document this design process in the form of a Keynote Presentation, a Prezi, or on a large piece of Poster board. These are the only three options… these will be presented and the class will vote on the best ideas Each step of the design process should be fully explained, leave no doubt in my mind about the planning put into your design of entire city.
13
Preparation Continued… You and your partner are not strictly designing one building or structure for the city at this point, you are designing the entire city’s layout. The platform that each structure will be built upon are 20’x30’ foam boards and each cities design will only utilize seven pieces of foam board that will eventually be bonded together. This requires you not only to determine and state what the materials used in the building of these structures will be but it also forces you to provide precise measurements of how big each structure will be while doing the design cycle. You will do this by using SEVEN note cards, drawing a rough sketch of each structure or building and provided the measurements of each. (the Circus Maximus should require two boards) you should also decorate each card with landscape features such as roads, trees, statues, etc. On the back of the card write down a list of the materials your group decides upon for creating the structure.
14
Finalizing your Preparation and Presenting Note the Aqueduct that is constructed will be inserted into the city lastly and should run from any angle to the roman bath and be able to feed water into your roman bath. You will use an extra foam board to create the bases or foundation that your aqueducts will sit on… Keep this all in mind during the creation of your design process After you have have laid your note cards out in a manner that works for you use a marker to identify how your design will incorporate the Aqueducts in the design process. Lastly take a photo with your iPad of the front and back of you note cards and incorporate it into you design process presentation. You will will be working on all of the previous steps today, all of tomorrow and half of Friday, then we will begin the presentation that day or on Monday. After presentations will pursue the actual creation of the city.
15
Potential Materials and tools need for the task keep these in mind during the design process MaterialsTools Cardboard, construction paper. Tape, clay X-acto knives Popsicle sticksHot Glue and Gun bottlesScissors Different sized boxesPaint brushes and assorted paints Paint, sharpies, glitter, color suppliesCREATIVITY LegosWILL POWER Lincoln Logs, KinexTEAMWORK Bottle caps The list is pretty much endless…
16
After the presentation… Following the presentation and the voting for the best ideas, the winning group will assume a leadership role within the class for the construction of the city. They will be tasked with assisting all other groups in the implementation of each component of the cities design. (They will still have the task of creating one of the buildings or structures for the design of the city) The rest of the class will split into seven other groups at random and given one of the structures for which to build, all the while following the ideas and dimensions of the winning group. Your group will build the structure you are given on one of the seven pieces of foam board. Remember they will later be bonded together It is crucial that if your group is having trouble you ask the groups designer to assist you in any way that may help you SEE WHY I SAID THIS WOULD REQUIRE COMPLETE TEAM WORK?
17
The Plaques While constructing the building or structure you are assigned you will also have to create a plaque that will be pinned to your piece of foam board The plaques should all look the same and have the following… The title of your building or structure The dimensions of the actual structure in Ancient Rome When it was built (in History) The name of the group that designed it Your models dimensions
18
To Review… You must complete a design cycle presentation and seven note card layout before we can vote… Must be finished by Friday! We must vote for the best design and adopt that groups ideas and begin to collaborate. We will be split into groups and be given the task of constructing one structure or building within Rome’s City. The winning group will act as a guide to make sure the projects is progressing correctly and in a timely manner. This is not meant to be a power trip…simply put… carry your weight! Don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t get side tracked or run off on another tangent.
19
Timeline and The Judging… You will have more than a week to actually construct the entire city… I will call you out if you do not come in to class and begin working right away…NO room for horse play or slacking off! There will be consequences that hurt the entire teams efforts! The Judging will be done by 4 to 6 anonymous teachers. TRUST ME YOU WANT TO WIN… BECAUSE…

PIZZA PARTY!! THE EMPEROR “LITTLE CAESAR” WILL BE PROVIDING THE WINNING CLASS WITH A PIZZA PARTY! THE WINNING GROUP WILL HAVE THEIR CITY DISPLAYED IN THE CENTRAL CABARRUS ART DISPLAY CASE AND POSSIBLY BE AN EXHIBIT IN THE SCHOOLS WINTER ART EXHIBIT! And above all you will join the list of winners who will forever have Bragging Rights!!!!!!!
