Atom structure

Review….

What about other atoms? Atomic number = the number of protons (each element has a different number of protons) The number of protons = the number of electrons (starting out…I’ll explain later) Atomic mass = number of protons + number of neutrons or…. mass-protons=neutrons

Orbit rules (shells) 1 st shell can hold a max of 2 electrons 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, shell can hold a max of 8 electrons Shells must fill up before we can have more shells

Draw Lithium atom Lithium is element number 3 so it has 3 protons Lithium has 3 protons so it has 3 electrons Lithium has a mass of 7, so 7-4= neutrons (4)

ATOM MODEL PROJECT Possible Materials: metal coat hanger, markers, scissors, glue, baseball size styrofoam ball, string (or yarn or strong thread), construction paper, cardboard, foam board, pipe cleaners and neatness. PROCEDURE: 1. Your teacher will assign you an atom for your model. The name of my atom is:______________________ 2. You will do some research and record the following information about your atom: A. Atomic number:_________________ B. Atomic mass:___________________ C. Number of Protons ___________________ D Number of Electrons______________ E. Number of Neutrons:_____________ (take the atomic mass and subtract the number of protons = number of neutrons) F. Arrangement of Electrons: 1 st shell___ 2 nd shell___ 3 rd shell___ 4 th shell ___

G. Make a 2-D sketch of your atom in the space below.

3. Use the information that you acquired from step #2 to construct a 3-D model of your atom. Your model must show the following: Be 3-Dimensional with the protons, neutrons, and electrons represented in their correct locations and by their correct respective sizes. B. Have a key attached to it that states the atoms -Element Name- number of electrons -Atomic number-Number of neutrons -Number of protons-Your name and period C. Contain a string and paper clip so that you teacher can hang it in the room GRADING: Will be based on how well you carry out the above procedures
