1933: Widespread bank failures. When banks failed people Lost of their $$. People began To pull their $$ out of all banks. March 5, 1933: Roosevelt declares “Bank Holiday” Closes banks for 4 days.

2 days after inauguration: close all banks for 4 days The EBRA : Reorganized the banks. Presidential Powers over banking Banks had to pass gov’t inspectons to reopen Next day deposits exceeded withdrawals Restore faith in Banks to the public! HUGE!

Informal Radio Talks Sat next to a fireplace in White House as he spoke Gained public Confidence! At the end of the bank crisis, FDR reassured the American people by saying, “ it is safer to keep your $ in a bank now, than under your mattress.”

FDIC Federal Securities Act required corporations to provide complete, truthful info on all stock offerings. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) Created to reform and restore confidence in the stock market by monitoring the market and enforce laws regarding the sales of stocks and bonds. Goal of the ND: regulate the Stock Market! 21 st Amendment – abolished 18 th Amendment. Allows gov’t to tax alcohol and raise revenue. Put people back to work making, distributing alcohol. Help get us out of the depression? “Happy Days are Here Again”

Agricultural Adjustment Act- Main object of the ND is to increase prices of farm products. Tennessee Valley Authority- Civilian Conservation Corps (Amer. Exp. Video) young single men to work building roads, parks,planting trees, helping in soil erosion and flood control projects. National Industrial Recovery Act- Same as NRA - $ to states to build schools and other community buildings. Also: to promote industrial growth. Limited production of an industry and set prices. Workers: right to unionize and bargain collectively. Civil Works Administration National Recovery Administration Home Owners Loan Corporation National Housing Act Federal Emergency Relief Administration- most helpful to the : unemployed, the aged and the ill.
